Hey guys,

every once and a while, when I am working on my MBA, i get a loud "ticking noise" in the upper right of my keyboard. It sounds like the harddrive is trying to think or something, but it only happens for about 5 seconds and it occurs even at idle if i dont do anything that requires the computer to use memory or access the cache, etc...

its weird because it just happens out of the blue. i was wondering if anyone else has experienced this..?

That would be your HDD. Take it to the store for a replacement if it bothers you, and make frequent backups.

When hard drives start ticking it means they are about to go so I would make frequent backups and either try bringing it in again or let it die and then have the replace it.

is the harddrive in the upper right corner?

my stupid MBA keeps doing it. the apple store said they performed "diagnostics" and didnt find anything. Ive been using it for less than an hour and the bloody thing made the noises like 5 times...

Yes it's in the top right corner (behind the pop-down connectors, I might add). It just the HDD seek for all it probably is. Just back up your stuff for the "just in case" scenario.

Mine does it periodically too. It's maddening. Worse is that I can't reproduce the noise on demand, so when I take it to the store they find nothing wrong with it.

Just backup religiously and buy Applecare before the warranty expires.

I have been using this MBA since February, and I never experienced the sound you describe... until... today. What's up with that sound, and why did it take 6 months to start??
