Got my 14” MBP M1 Pro in Space Gray.

I’m in love with this machine. The design has grown on me so much. I regret the earlier thread I posted about hating it. I even kind of like the notch.

Speed and battery life are incredible. No fan noise or coil whine here! Monterey runs beautifully. And MagSafe 3 is just awesome.

I think I’ve finally settled on the right computer for me! And I’ll also never be going back to Intel lol.

I ordered the silver 14" M1 Pro Macbook base model on 3/8 and it shows expected delivery 3/22-30. Very much looking forward to getting it.

I plan to connect it to my existing external monitor for when I am home. Fingers crossed that I have no monitor problems like so many do with Macs. I also have another external monitor at another location that I plan to use when I am there. Again, fingers crossed. And sometimes when I am away for a few months at some other place then I buy a new monitor to use while there. Again fingers crossed that all will work okay. I have done this sort of thing for years with various Windows laptops and never once had a problem. So, monitor problems are a new thing for me. Culture shock.

Do you have any debate between the max and pro?

I figure the m1 pro is the best balance for battery and speed -- light gpu usage but the max suffers if the higher gpu power isnt always needed.

I read one review saying that after time the space gray can discolor in the palm rest areas. Anyone have any experience with that?

I had a Space Gray 2018 15” from September of 2018 to November of 2020, when I happily dumped it for my current 16” M1 Pro.
That machine had many, many issues, but a discolored palm rest was not one of them. Used it throughout the latter 1/2 of undergrad as well.

I’m still torn on the space gray vs. silver choice myself. My current 16” is space gray, but silver is extremely beautiful too.

Glad to hear that they are no discoloring. Also I notice Intel base MacBook has so many problems all the time especially with the drivers.

Work computer is a MacBook Pro Intel base, I'm getting daily crash with anything connect to the USB-C like the external display or usb hub. It's driving me nut.

I don't have this problem at all with my personal M1 MacBook.

Love my 14" M1 Pro as well. Such a great machine. My heart wanted the 16", but I needed the extra portability.
Selling the iMac to get rid of intel Macs as soon as possible. Only wish Apple made the Studio in Space grey.

I'm on the same boat, but with the 16". I needed portability, but I'm a big/strong guy and I don't need to work on the go, really just portability is the key.

The 16" Pro is the best machine I have ever owned. What surprised me the most was how good the M1 CPU is with apps designed for it. Native intel app < ARM Web app by a huge margin. Make sure, if at all possible your SW is optimised and you will experience nirvana!

My heart is set on the 16 Max Pro maxed to 64 GB :) Delivery time in EU is crazy. Thinking what to do and saving up , meanwhile I am using my MBP 16 i9 year old and nearly new. Now typing from a MBP 13 M1 and it's really great!
As previous Intel owners do you all notice increment in speed even on normal use apart of editing?

As of the newest Montery update, battery life is longer for me with light usage. Went from 12 hour avg to 16 with the same weekly use cases. I was very shocked when I got to end of my work days and my battery was still halfway instead of in the 30%'s...

Edit: Should have clarified this is the 64GB Max chip I’m using, not the Pro. I look at screen time, battery usage, and activity monitor to see monitor my daily/weekly activity. AGAIN, I am seeing improved battery life this week so far as well. Moderate/Heavy use is still the same though.

Just got my base 14" model this weekend and it's been an awesome experience. I used it for some BR 1080p movie encoding using Handbrake and it was flying at ~260 FPS when using the H.265 10-bit VideoToolBox option. It was pretty much silent during encoding and perfectly usable for other activities. I know it's mostly due VTB option but still.

I had a 2018 13“ space gray MBP that developed this problem after a while. But for me this happens because I use benzoyl peroxide for an acne treatment and I sweat it out through my palms over time.
I hope that doesn’t happen. Im pretty OCD and try to wash my hands before using my computer though so hopefully that helps. ?

I love my 14" - but I somewhat regret going SG, I always try to go silver since I just like it more. It's not the end of the world of course, and the computer is amazing. I didn't think anything could beat the M1 Air feeling, but this one can. I still prefer the form factor of the Air though, everytime I use it (my work computer) it just feels so perfect in many ways.

I had a SG 15" MBP for many years, in fact we have three of the 2017 models in SG at work. None of them show any signs of discoloration after almost five years of hard work. In fact, we had four 2017 models in total at work, none have had any problems at all. We were all expecting keyboard problems etc. I guess we were lucky. :)
