I have 4 gigs of ram and plenty of hd space free, but some apps give me a low memory warning every so often. Most of the time, it happens in microsoft office 2008 (it is fully patched). This is on OSX 10.5.8. I have tried repairing permissions. Any idea what could be causing this? The last time I saw the error, i had close to 2 gigs of ram free lol.

this can happen because sometimes apps can only use a limited amount of memory. for example i have 8GB of RAM in my MBP but when im running graphic intensive projects in photoshop i will get a low memory warning because it can only use 3gb of system memory at one time. so that could be the problem you are running into.

can't wait for CS5...

I can understand photoshop, but word needing over 3 gigs of ram is highly unlikely lol. Word's usage is way lower than that when I see those error messages.

I've seen Word give out or memory errors for no apparent reason, although I don't use the Mac version. Word must have some outdated internal memory limits, for example on versions with VBA (Office 08 doesn't have it), there is a 640k limit on VBA forms, which I hit one time when I had a few hundred form objects in one form.
