LTE Ipad and Imessage

Question. Thinking about picking up a LTE Ipad of some variety, likely the Mini 4 form factor, mainly because of the GPS in there.

Scenario: Assuming if I get a cheap data SIM card/plan, but often I'll want to have Imessages (and sure Facetime calls too, why not) from my Iphone come through there. I assume I have to turn LTE off (or of course not have a LTE Sim in) for that to then connect via Bluetooth and Wifi, to the Iphone. Fine.

However, will the Ipad (or Icloud account?) have both numbers associated with the LTE tablet, that being the Iphone phone # I want connected to get Imessage, and, the # that is assigned to the data SIM card? Obviously I want to pick only one at a time but will I have that option? Or is the LTE Ipad (or account) only able to have one number associated with it while a Sim is in there, that being the number on the LTE Sim?

Pretty sure I can do what I want, but someone please confirm how that is handled by the Ipad.

iPads, even LTE ones, don't have a phone number. In the settings for messages you can choose what address you wish to start conversations from - and you should check this across all devices to make sure it's the same (or you'll get multiple threads from the same person). This can be your phone number (on your iPhone), or an email address associated with your iCloud account.

iMessages and FaceTime calls will come in over your LTE with no need to tether to your iPhone. The only things which need wifi to forward are SMS and phone calls.

However the data sim will have a phone number attached to it, I think that's just the standard way that Sims work. I'll be blocking incoming text/calls from it through the carrier, but technically it is a stand alone data sim, but still does have a phone number associated with it, at least the carrier (which is a different carrier than my phone service) here that I am dealing with. So my question there still stands, can that LTE connection work with my Iphone number, or will the LTE SIM connection take priorty?

Which is why I say tether; if the LTE connection can't be active because it will pull only the Imessages sent to the phone number associated with the data sim, then I'd have to turn off LTE and tether phone to Ipad.

While it has a phone number the iPad doesn't see it - on purpose. Therefore it is as though the iPad doesn't have a number attached to it as far as iMessage and FaceTime etc is concerned. If you use the same account for iMessage and FaceTime on both devices you won't encounter problems.

The same applies with message forwarding too; if you go into Settings>Messages and toggle iPad on from there you'll receive them from iPhone (you'll need to confirm a code first).
