Surprised I havn't seen any threads of the 1020. Would you switch? Is the camera that significant to you?

The 41MP camera is the only part that's tempting. Other than that, even with the coming GDR2 update, Windows Phone 8 OS still needs a lot of improvements in order to me to get hold of a Lumia...

Somewhat, the camera is the device's highlight but other than that, I think WP8 is a bit limited for my needs. Otherwise, I might consider it for the camera alone.

Roughly 3-5% of this board would be interested in actually purchasing a Windows Phone, based off WP worldwide marketshare data over the last 12 months. Ergo, little to no posts. Eventually, (like when monkey boy Ballmer gets fired!) Microsoft will prioritize mobile, get every major app into the market, plus Xbox style exclusives and fine tune Windows 8 software (to utilize current hardware configurations) to make it as solid as 7 on the PC. Only then will companies like Nokia benefit because people will have phones on par with Android (spec wise anyway).

I will buy their hardware if or when this happens. Not before. And I am willing to bet this is how many people feel.

I've had Windows 8 on a HTC 8X, I had windows 7 on a HTC Trophy, I had windows 7.5 Mango on a Lumia 800

7 & 7.5 Mango felt fresh - new but at same time troubled by lack of third party app selection.

Windows phone 8 has some good improvements however some seriously not so good ones too.

Yes app selection has improved on the marketplace, but..... With the new tile size (very small) your home screen can soon become a very cluttered mess.

The 'live tile' is nice in theory but in practice with so few apps offering the functionality it on becomes pointless as the level of information on offer is just simply inadequate especially when you factor in

No notification hub..... Seriously windows phone needs a proper notification area now with the ability to respond to notifications there and then without having to launch each application to see what is happening.

Secondly the ME tile and the PEOPLE tile should become 1. Having the two is redundant. Simply have a section in the people app just about you. No need for duplicate apps and live tiles, especially as very little info other than people's faces is available on the live tile anyway..

Thirdly app drawer is now woefully inadequate especially if you have installed a lot of apps. Its just takes too long to look through it.

Forth, the settings are inadequate. Customisations settings are pitiful in comparison to nearly every other OS.even iOS. Font settings are useless, changing font size often doesn't impact where increased font size is needed - and that is primarily in the CONTACTS app. Where the persons contact number is just too small and hard to read. Seriously this is PHONE. The one thing that should be very quick to read on any contact is the telephone number. Asking it so small is a bad design choice.

I could go on... And on....

Windows Phone 7 was about simplicity and ease of use. As more content has become available, sadly the restrictions having a massive wall of indiscreet tiles with very few offer live functionality has now caused the OS to lose its ease of use, and just makes navigating a hassle.

It does a lot of things right, but it radically needs a rethink going forward. A centralised notification hub is required, easy access to settings for Bluetooth, wifi (such as toggles) and most definetly a redesigned App drawer rather than a tower of a list....

Also surprisingly the UI is one area of Windows phone 8 where adding support for HD displays hasn't offered a massive tangible benefit compared to Sub-HD and QHD screens. The blocky live tiles and scrolling UI in apps actually don't benefit hugely with 720 & possibly 1080p screens in the future. So again a rethink may be needed in how the UI is best presented is also required.

So yeah factor all that in and...... A 41mp alone which sounds great just doesn't entice me enough to pop den 600 euro for another windows phone handset. Especially one with a 720p screen and Dual Core when Microsoft are already touting support for 1080p and Quad Core chips in the next software revision due so soon too. When paying €600 I want the reassurance I have got the best windows phone, not the best windows phone until the 1025/1050 in just two or three months time with quad core and 1080p and possibly OS 8.1 in tow...

In many ways the Nokia 1020 is a phone too late for current Windows phone 8 hardware market, or too early for Windows Phone 8.1 / 8.5

Is that enough of an explanation why any of us here are just not that bothered OP :)

Software still lags android and iOS and the app selection is ass.

No. I like Windows Phone, but Microsoft needs to stop dicking around and act like they have 40 years of software experience.

.

It always will lag behind iOS and Android numbers wise in the App Store just down to scale of numbers of users, but compared to the section on BB App World its miles upon miles ahead of Blackberry......... Now there is an App Store that would seriously shock you ;)

That's my point. MSFT is a software company first. Perhaps the largest in the world.

Why are they not getting their teams to produce rich content in-house, for a richer user experience until the independent developers get on board.

The fact it took this long for them to get a clue and produce Halo for mobile proves there is a lot of WTF going on at Redmond.

Get your Windows Phone, XBOX, Windows Desktop and Surface teams in the same room and create a united front backed by lots of cross pollination of software and user experience.

Don't waste your money.

The only thing attractive about that phone was the camera and as the samples are starting to come out, the camera is looking much less impressive and not what it was hyped up to be.

This does not look impressive.

Nope, tried windows phone before on a dell venue pro, samsung focus, and htc surround and while at first seemed new and fresh, quickly became stale and boring.

I much prefer a grid of icons for my apps instead of a long scrolling list. The live tiles for the most part offer little more information than an icon with a badge and are much more limiting than a widget. When i used it there was no folder support which i didn't like, not sure if that has been fixed yet. No notification center, the status bar disapears, and lack of quality apps also bugged me. Some games showed up in the app drawer while others you had to go into the xbox app to see them. And I really grew tired of that home screen with the black background, honestly it was even more boring than iOS. Maps needed alot of work. And the bing search button was annoying.

There were some good things though. The keyboard is among my favorites, only recently surpassed by the keyboard on BB10. The font was nice and some of the styling worked, like in the email and messaging app. The people hub is also a neat idea and how if you pin a contact to your home screen you get notified of just their updates. The os was also very smooth, on par with iOS.

Overall though, it just wasn't for me, and I haven't seen anything in WP8 that would tempt me to drop either my iPhone or android to get one. So even though the camera is killer, the os just kills it for me.

I think Microsoft is pushing out updates for Windows Phone way too slowly. They need to realise that their OS is lacking in many aspects, as it debuted later than all its competitors, hence the need to have more frequent QUALITY updates in order to ensure that WP remains viable in the smartphone market. Right now it seems to me like Nokia (for some part, HTC) is putting in all the effort to spearhead the promotion for WP, but Microsoft is not engaging the same amount of effort on the software side. From all the reviews of WP that I had happen to read, most of the negative aspects point to the software side, and Microsoft have to do something about it.

It's a catching up game for WP, but at the moment its as if Microsoft thinks they're way ahead of the market or something. Reveling in their own arrogance is not something I would encourage them to do if they want their mobile operating system to be highly sought after in the future, or even stay existent, for that matter.

the camera is really a SIGNIFICANT improvement but other than that there's nothing interesting, i never liked the windows UI, in my opinion they should rebuild their UI from scratch.

only the camera is the great thing about this phone, nothing else, i think nokia will soon release it's new and better flagship phone which will offer much more than just a better camera.

If it was free off-contract sure.

I like to be productive on my phone, and that'd be the big issue for me on WP. They could have every game on earth on their platform, but that'd be utterly useless for my needs in a smartphone.

The camera always comes 5th, IMO.

Massive disappointment for what's being touted as the new Lumia flagship. Same old 920 hardware and software with a new camera slapped on the back. Yawn.

This is what I'm waiting for. Microsoft is already in so many households if they knew what the hell they were doing they could blow the doors off both android and iOS. Unfortunately they have a bunch of asshats running the show.

I'm a lifelong apple and iphone guy, but I'm seriously considering this phone. I'm just not getting too much clear info on how different windows phone is, and the sacrifice i will make in apps in switching. Its not so much the camera that is making me thing this way though. I've always loved the look of the Nokia Lumia, more than the iPhone but the OS is really what is holding me back that and the ecosystem which I do take advantage of.

And the 5S doesn't seem like it will have anything worth waiting for. I will wait, and and see what it does offer. But the hardware is tired. The OS changes aren't great.

OS updates are too slow, I want major features to be added every year, or even every 6 months. No google apps, I want google maps and voice at the very minimum. No notification center. I'm skipping the WP8 until this is fixed. I'm also getting tired of iOS but the updates and google apps are keeping me with iphone. Seriously, iphone 4 got OS 4, 5, 6, and 7. Even though OS 6 and 7 are minor, it lets you run almost all the latest apps except for games.

I just got my wife a used HTC 8X for a really good price, and I have to say I love the windows phone os....with the nokia apps this would make things even sweeter...that said, if I get a lumia (most likely the 928) it will be a second phone as I have left ios for the latest and greatest android offering and each time I find myself coming back to the iPhone.

God i wish Nokia would with the program and release at least a few Android phones, people would snap them up. Like the Lumia 925 i would own one of them in second if it ran JB.

Got to try it out today in the AT&T store...

The thing is not nearly as big as i thought!!...It looks pretty huge in all the videos.. The camera is actually pretty small to what it looks like in the videos also...The hump on the back is barely there and not really noticeable in the hand.

The build quality is great, and yellow fits the device perfectly... Really tempted to switch over to AT&T. I think i will wait to see what the 5S offers though and then make up my mind.

Screen looked great, OS was as smooth or smoother than iOS. Camera was great from the pics i took.

The big thing that got me though was Office, i tried Windows phones out a few times in the stores over the last couple years but never clicked on office for some reason. WOW..it is nice..Everything just looks really nice and big on it. Very easy to read and create with it.

The lack of apps don't bother me much. I am done with games on phones. I have a few of the more common apps but other than i could care less about what they are missing from the app store.
