I've had Windows 8 on a HTC 8X, I had windows 7 on a HTC Trophy, I had windows 7.5 Mango on a Lumia 800
7 & 7.5 Mango felt fresh - new but at same time troubled by lack of third party app selection.
Windows phone 8 has some good improvements however some seriously not so good ones too.
Yes app selection has improved on the marketplace, but..... With the new tile size (very small) your home screen can soon become a very cluttered mess.
The 'live tile' is nice in theory but in practice with so few apps offering the functionality it on becomes pointless as the level of information on offer is just simply inadequate especially when you factor in
No notification hub..... Seriously windows phone needs a proper notification area now with the ability to respond to notifications there and then without having to launch each application to see what is happening.
Secondly the ME tile and the PEOPLE tile should become 1. Having the two is redundant. Simply have a section in the people app just about you. No need for duplicate apps and live tiles, especially as very little info other than people's faces is available on the live tile anyway..
Thirdly app drawer is now woefully inadequate especially if you have installed a lot of apps. Its just takes too long to look through it.
Forth, the settings are inadequate. Customisations settings are pitiful in comparison to nearly every other OS.even iOS. Font settings are useless, changing font size often doesn't impact where increased font size is needed - and that is primarily in the CONTACTS app. Where the persons contact number is just too small and hard to read. Seriously this is PHONE. The one thing that should be very quick to read on any contact is the telephone number. Asking it so small is a bad design choice.
I could go on... And on....
Windows Phone 7 was about simplicity and ease of use. As more content has become available, sadly the restrictions having a massive wall of indiscreet tiles with very few offer live functionality has now caused the OS to lose its ease of use, and just makes navigating a hassle.
It does a lot of things right, but it radically needs a rethink going forward. A centralised notification hub is required, easy access to settings for Bluetooth, wifi (such as toggles) and most definetly a redesigned App drawer rather than a tower of a list....
Also surprisingly the UI is one area of Windows phone 8 where adding support for HD displays hasn't offered a massive tangible benefit compared to Sub-HD and QHD screens. The blocky live tiles and scrolling UI in apps actually don't benefit hugely with 720 & possibly 1080p screens in the future. So again a rethink may be needed in how the UI is best presented is also required.
So yeah factor all that in and...... A 41mp alone which sounds great just doesn't entice me enough to pop den 600 euro for another windows phone handset. Especially one with a 720p screen and Dual Core when Microsoft are already touting support for 1080p and Quad Core chips in the next software revision due so soon too. When paying €600 I want the reassurance I have got the best windows phone, not the best windows phone until the 1025/1050 in just two or three months time with quad core and 1080p and possibly OS 8.1 in tow...
In many ways the Nokia 1020 is a phone too late for current Windows phone 8 hardware market, or too early for Windows Phone 8.1 / 8.5
Is that enough of an explanation why any of us here are just not that bothered OP
