Lumia 920 low-light shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III

I had the GS 3 and it sometimes had great pictures, sometimes bad pictures. Very uneven.
But as professional photographers always say (And I am not a professional). The person taking the picture is the one most responsible for making a photo look great.
Low light on the S3 is horrendous. This does not make a lot of sense because the optics are the same as the 4s. At least so I have been told. With plentiful light the pics look great. Wonder if it is software / firmware thing.
My one x camera is noteably inferior for taking photos compared to my 4s. Even HDR shots on the One X are plagued by wrong color saturation or burn out.
Seems like they spent ages on the one X optimising speed and burst mode but forgot that the picture still has to look someway respectable.
The 920 is tempting me seriously at the moment, however after having a Lumia 800 and a Nokia N9 last year, I was very bitterly disappointed with the camera optics in those handsets despite nokia's claims and lab photos that they pushed out at their launches.
For that reason I wait and see 'real human' consumer hands on photos and not Nokia labs shots. Burn me twice shame on you, burn me three times, shame on me...
I don't believe those SIII pics. Something isn't right there as people would have moaned about it. Or maybe Samsung users just don't care enough.
You must take note that...
those photos were taken in pretty much near darkness. In 'real world' photo shooting most camera phone users wouldn't have even attempted taking a photo in those conditions in the first place, so would not have had the piss poor results to moan about.
I know the lowlight of my S3 was def not as good as my 4S however it seems the verge did a test and used "night mode" and it was much more comparable and competitive. I guess I'll have to try night mode on my cam, but I just prefer auto settings as most ppl do...
Right, because someone is going to buy a phone for how well it shoots photos in dim lighting LOL. Nokia is really grasping at straws here, trying anything to get people to buy their inferior product.
Probably not going to buy the Nokia ONLY because of the camera but after looking at the performance of the SGIII, someone may certainly consider NOT getting that phone. Being able to get great pics/video with your phone is a bonus. Not being able to get decent photos could be a deal breaker for many.
I get fantastic pics with my SIII, even in low light. However, I am a professional photographer so I know well enough to either use the flash, change the scene mode to indoor or night and if that doesn't work, raise the ISO. Only someone with no clue (or in this useless test) would try to shoot in low light on auto mode.
Exactly. Those pics don't represent the GS3 camera's capability correctly. But the 920 is obviously much better in low light.
Better low light performance in auto mode, thats it. I would put all my money on the SIII over the 920 if you were to let pro photographers compare them. Samsung makes cameras, Nokia doesnt. Big difference.
I don't care about the pros. I care what I'm able to do, and I haven't been able to create a low light pic comparable to the Lumia 920 shown in the link. I have been able to get it as good as the iP5. I tried every possible setting combination, which is a lot.
I think you would loose this bet big time. The backlight sensor and the lens are superior in the Nokia. When you look at many reviews Nokia's have had fantastic camera quality. I don't know what the S3 can do but I did see a video, which states the 920 will do a 2.0 f-stop. iPhone 5 is 2.4 and I can't find the specs for the S3.

Here's a high resolution photo on the S3 in night mode compared to the Lumia 920. The 920 is pretty impressive but would never get a Windows phone just for the camera.

Not bad on the s3. Bit grainy. Nokia shot is lovely for a phone. I'm with in regards to a windows phone...
If WP7 apps are compatible you have >100,000 to start with. Average quality is better then iOS as WP has no pre-2010 apps (I think WP6.x apps are not compatible)

Neither would I. It's lots of other functions I like about it. For good quality pix I have a camera anyway.
Everything is perfect about this phone. For the first time in smartphone history...
