So I bought Luminar instead of Lightroom given it's so much cheaper and I am pretty much a beginner to photo editing. My iMac is the 2017 5k version, with standard specs but a 512 SSD HD and 24 GB RAM.

Opening a RAW file of roughly 30MB already takes a few seconds, but if I decide to go ahead and open 10 of them at the same time, I have to wait almost a minute before all of them are properly loaded into Luminar. While the importing takes place the iMac isn't freezing or anything (never experienced such a thing with Windows, which would always crash), I can actually even switch to chrome and still browse the web.

I read somewhere, that Luminar is supposed to be slower than Lightroom. Is that the only reason though, or is my iMac with its specs at its limit already?

Activity Control does show that the RAM is being almost fully used, so I wonder if it will help upgrading to 32 GB, which is maximum or not.

Opening 10 raw files is going to take some time regardless of how much RAM you have. If you have 24 gig of RAM you are doing just fine. Luminar is a little slower, but they are improving their product a lot with each release. I would stick with it for now unless you are set on maxing out your ram. It would not hurt, but I am not sure it would speed up the process noticeably. Just my opinion.

Thank you for the feedback :)

Generally speaking, if I wanted my iMac to be able to instantly open up 10 RAW files within Luminar or Lightroom, what kind of specs would I need?

I just realized, that RAW files can also be as big as 80MB and not just 30MB. When purchasing the iMac I pretty much read everywhere that the basic setup + RAM upgrade will do the job. Getting a little nervous now, if I missed important upgrades :-(
