Luminarias

So it's not exactly the right time of year for these types of things, but I was going through some old photo CDs and came across some pics I thought I'd share. I'd wait till Christmas, but chances are I'd forget to post then.

In any case, every Christmas Eve the street my parents live on turns off the street lights and every house puts out luminarias (luminaries, or whatever you'd like to call them). You can then walk around the whole street and enjoy the warm glow of the candles in front of all the houses. It's really a cool site!

For the past five years (except for last year), my family has done ice luminarias. My older sister got the idea from a magazine she read. The ice gives a nice reflection to the light from the candle and it's really cool to see the whole fire and ice contrast. Here are some pics we took from one of the years we did it.

Funny.. I used to do this as a kid in RI. This year I finally was home with my wife for Christmas and wanted to do it again, but couldn't for the life of me find waxed paper sandwich bags. I have very fond memories of it and plan on trying again this year.

My friend's family does large size ice lanterns...with 10 or 15 gallon buckets. They make a ton of them and preserve them in shade until Christmas Eve, when they put them out and line their driveway and the path between their main house and guest house.

That would be so cool looking! My mom starts making the ice luminarias about two weeks before Christmas. Then as the kids start coming they will help make them--a batch in the morning and a batch in the evening. We would store them separated by wax paper in apple boxes in the shade. Unfortunately, they didn't do them last year because none of the kids came until Christmas day (we were in India so we weren't there at all). So sad....

haha well there's this scene in the movie where a neighbor comes to the door and asks Billy Bob Thornton's character if he's going to participate in the communitie's Luminaria display for the holidays. His response is "what the f*ck is a lunimaria?" or something to that effect.
