M$ Office V.X Help

Being a university student, I use M$ office quite a bit for term papers, reports, etc. but I am having a really hard time sending office V.X documents via e-mail to PC users. It seems as though the windows program (98, 2000, XP) doesn't recognize that the document is in word or excel format and the user has to go through a few steps in order to get it to open (if they can).
I have never had any problems sending Office V.X documents to other mac users and I have all the latest updates. Does anyone know what may be wrong? Do I have to save the document in a different format before I send it in an e-mail?

I sometimes have problems sending my Word X documents by e-mail. I get two attached files in the e-mail received on the PC, one that works, one that doesn't. Transferring with ZIP however everything works fine (except those bloody invisible 'dot' files that show up in windows )

See if you're friend/teacher/whatever is getting two attachments. Failing that, save to an older Office format (98?) and that should work. If problems still persist, well, check out my sig. and go download OpenOffice.org.

If all else fails, send as an .rft file or txt....
a safe format would be .pdf which you can do by doing a save as .pdf from the print screen.

When emailing and using Enturage, make sure you have the file format checked off for windows users. You see this menu whenever you attach a file. Apparently, it encodes the info so that windows users can open it ok.

Strange

I thought I'd test this myself. So, I sent an email with an excel and a word attachment from my PB to my hotmail address. Went to my pc opened outlook express and retrieved the message. Sure enough it indicated there were attachments, but it wouldn't open them. Then I closed outlook exp and went to hotmail via IE, accessed the message and the attachments opened. Then, I opened MS Outlook, retrieved the message and the attachments opened.

So, what's up with Outlook Express??

Are you sure you are using the correct mail-encoding?
It seems the file gets "split up" into the resource fork and data fork after being retrieved by the PC...?

OK, there could be two problems here:

1. Sometimes, depending on your settings, Office for Mac doesn't append the .doc or .xls extension onto the filename. When you email the file to a Windows user, the file's MIME type should tell Windows what type of file it is. But for some reason, Outlook Express seems to ignore the MIME type, and therefore Windows doesn't know what sort of file you've sent them.

2. The other problem is that, by default, Outlook Express blocks several types of attachments. This means that if the filetype is detected correctly, OE will then go and block it because it "might contain a virus"

So, when you send a file, make sure it has a .doc or .xls extension before sending, so that OE can recognise it. The other problem is harder to get around because it depends on the other users' settings

Get the receipient to go to Tools->Options->Security and untick "Do not allow attachments...." and it should work.
