I was in the Apple Store today and saw a couple of M1 13” MBP to test out. I expected it to perform like my M1 iPad Pro, but they don’t for strange reasons.

If I open apps, I get beach balls all over the place. Also Safari is not smooth at all.

Now I am sure if you do video export, you will see the performance like you expect. But with very basic things, the M1 13” MBP doesn’t perform so well.

Anyone knows what the deal is?

Must be because it was demo unit. They are very fast.

At least with Safari I think you are seeing the difference between a 60 Hz Mac scroll and a 120 Hz iPad Pro.

Are you sure you were looking at an M1 instead of a Intel Mac?
Maybe the demo unit had a VPN, network VLAN or proxy running setup by another customer ?

Both my M1 iMac & Mini are super fast - never have seen a spinning beach ball.

Architecture wouldn't make a difference. My 2015 Air runs OS12 just fine with no beachballs, just a little lag. A new Intel would likely be nearly imperceivably different vs a M1 in just opening apps unless placed side-by-side to each other.

Yes, it was the M1.

Good to hear you don’t have issues with your units. So i have nothing to worry about then when I order the M2X 16” MBP then.

Likely not, although personally I'll hold off until the 2nd generation as Apple has been known to be overly ambitious with the MBP's physical redesign's resulting in chaos for the customers - 2016 MBP...

By the 2nd generation of the M1X/M2 etc. issues will have been rectified and or clearly known. My fear is that Apple will once again focus on being thinner and this may bring problems. That said Apple clearly doesn't want to be in a situation where all MBP's/portables are on extended warranty due to poor design & qualification

Over I think the initial M1's are bullet proof, well and truly over engineered as in no shape or form was Apple going to take any risks with the launch of it's own silicon. By the time I need to my M1 MBP Apple will likely be on the 2nd Gen cycle of the M1X/M2 with the majority of the bugs ironed out or known.
