My wife’s laptop has started doing this! Allegedly it just happened.

All text is going blurry and images blurring but almost like a very old monitor

Any ideas and cost of the fix?

You have a faulty display.
Most probable cause is the amount of debris present in the bottom of the display.
Your wife needs to keep this part clean, or it will happen again.

Assuming is the 2020 model:

Amazon has some "compatible" models. But quality is not there and True Tone probably cannot be enabled.
Also the camera is sometimes no HD.

If you do your own replacement, $350-$450. It's because you're replacing the entire top cover. It is doable. YouTube is very helpful for this. Repair done by a pro will add even more. Probably closer to $600.

If you opt for new, don't throw the old one out. There are refurbishers who buy broken machines for parts. You can reset it and sell it. I just did a trade in form on BackMarket dot com for a base model M1 Air 2020, 8GB, 256 with a cracked screen (the only option for sub-functional screen) and it came back $151.

Good point about that.. it’s a 1TB 16 gig model as well so had a decent spec

Extremely odd but the screen has fixed itself. It’s been acting up all day and she came back to it tonight and it’s working again.

Fingers crossed

Was it happening when the lid was open at the normal angle? Did it go away when closing the lid by a couple of degrees?

My MBA M1 started doing this a few days ago and got progressively worse so it’s now gone in for diags. I posted about this last night.

Let us know your outcome and costs.

Ours persisted like the photos I posted for 2 days and then it just stopped it’s utterly bizarre.

My wife really doesn’t look after things though and I’m wondering if her manhandling it as oddly fixed what ever the issue was.

For example when it was broken I saw her pick it up by the screen!

I’ve got a horrible feeling it’s just a glitch and might break again soon

The diagnostics picked up the following:
  • NAND Read Error Test failed on storage drive = replacement logic board
  • Display has visible lines and glitches potentially due to damaged bezel under the glass/LCD = replacement screen
  • IO board damaged, possibly by liquid = replacement board
  • Battery failing = replacement battery
Total = £1100

They said that their diags pick up on anything that is starting to fail, and Apple's policy is to only offer a complete repair, ie they won't replace just the screen to solve the lines/ghosting/blurriness - I'd have to pay the full £1100.

I've had the machine since launch and it's been meticulously looked after. The screen is perfectly normal if I keep the lid at around 95deg. Drive and battery are great at present.

My only option really for the screen is a 3rd party repair so I'll look into that later.

That’s gutting! Our screen is still doing okay but did have a 2 minute blip last night.

I assume it will just start to get worse.
