as we know, M1 now is in both Desktop and Laptop.
Mac mini, MBA, MBP, IMac 24, Ipad Pro now are all using M1 chip.

which one is faster or they are all same speed?

is Macbook Air performance almost same as Imac 24?

in Intel era, desktop cpu is faster than laptop cpu.

what is advantage of desktop using M1, comparing to Ipad Pro or Macbook Air?

This is what I am thinking, too. There might be some additional "thermal headroom" given the surface area of the iMac (despite how thin it is). The fact that there are two fans for the cooling solution seems promising that there might be some extra performance squeezed out as compared to other models with the M1.

M1 iMac has moved the power supply outside the casing and made it an external power brick.

That by itself removed a lot of heat and blocked areas that were common in all previous iMacs.

My M1 Mini still has a power supply inside that takes up space and creates a little bit of heat - so I am hopeful the new iMac will run better than any other previous M1 or Intel Mac!

And don't forget the older Intel Macbooks that ran hot most of the time (like my awful $2500 16" MBP).

For $1299, the M1 iMac is going to be worth every penny!

I think it depends on a couple of variables, but I think the M1 Mac Mini will still be the fastest overall.

For most situations, I would guess that the performance will go Mac Mini>MBP>iMac>MBA.

One variable is the 4.5k native resolution of the iMac, compared to 2560x1600 of the MBP and MBA, and potentially even lower for the Mac Mini.

I have my M1 Mac Mini plugged into an ultra wide 30" @ 2560x1080.

I would suspect that running the iMac at the higher resolution could lower some performance metrics.

I think that any heat disadvantage that the Mac Mini has from its power supply would be minimal. It generally runs really cool.

Maybe the heat from the 24" display might make up for the lack of internal power supply.

If there is a cooling advantage of the iMac, I suspect it would be from extended high load situations in which the Mac Mini starts to throttle after a while.

I agree, but mostly for the display. Just power alone, the Mac Mini is a much better choice when it comes to price.

Yes, but my base M1 Mini I use 2 displays, peripherals and costs more than a base iMac.

Since I have the base M1 Mini with a single fan and power supply in the same case; we will see...

2 weeks and counting for the new base M1 iMac.....

Interesting. My year old 16” MBP runs as cool as a cucumber. I don’t do any video editing, but I usually have all the Affinity apps (Photo, Designer, Publisher) running, plus a few Firefox browser tabs, Finder, music player etc. Even when doing a bit of music with Ableton, and a load of VST’s, it barely gets warm at all.

Far from awful, I’d say it was the best computer I’ve ever owned.

I'm pretty sure the Mini is the fastest. I think the Mini has the best thermal system. Plus, the Mini is the best bang for your buck, given that you get ethernet, USB-A, HDMI, and USB-c WITHOUT ANY DONGLES! I think the Mini is not only the fastest, but the best. Apple should make an iMac but without the M1, and make it the Display XDR.

Looks like some benchmarks are starting to show up.

The ones that thought that the M1 iMac would be on par with the other M1 Macs appear to be correct.

Maybe the cooling of the new iMacs might lead to less thermal throttling, but the performance peak is the same.

Not sure about the GPU performance, but again, I think that it will be at best on par with the M1 Mac Mini, if not lower.
