As per the title?

What system did you go with (MBA, MBP or Mini) and did you stick with your choice? Or, did you have second thoughts/regrets and swap it out for a different system?

I’ve ordered the M1 MBP 512 16, and hope I’ve made the right choice. Was thinking the Air may be more comfortable to type on, but I liked the little extras the MBP is equipped with. Also, I’ve never used a Touch Bar before, and I’m really looking forward to playing around with it. Watched a few tutorial videos, and it looks really intriguing.

What‘s your story?

Mini 16/512.

I want a desktop.
Super content with that choice works great for me. I have a NAS so I don't need more onboard storage.

Nightmare.. ordered and still have a MBP13 M1 as this is in general my most loved Macbook line. However ordered and cancelled now 5 times a MBA at Amazon as its so close to the MBP13 and might be smarter to save the 300 EUR as I anyway want to buy next year a redesigned MBP13/14.... tough choice...my brain says go for the Air and safe the money but my heart is still a Pro lover haha :)

Ordered a MBP 16/512, but after reading reviews and watching some of the videos, I cancelled my order and put in one for the MBA 8/256 instead. Got the T7 1tb cheap on BF instead of upgrading HD.

For the next ten months I'm gonna edit a lot of 4k video, but none of them will be any longer than 7-10 minutes, so I figured the MBA will suffice. Most of the footage will come from a GoPro, so I'm guessing FCP won't have any difficulties dealing with it. The idea is to sell it and buy the MBP 14" when that one comes around, but I probably won't ever need to edit/make videos again after the summer - so I'm considering just keeping this one for the next 5-7 years.

I also intend to buy the redesign when they launch, but I’ve still ordered an M1 MBP.

Don’t stress over 300 EUR, just enjoy your new machine.

I was considering the MBA, because I thought the tapered design would be more comfortable to type on.

However, I like the benefits of the Pro, so that’s what I’ve ordered.

I have an Air and my Son has an older Pro I handed down to him. When I heard this claim, I tried it out. There is no difference in the typing position between the two that I am able to discern.

Originally went MBA 16Gb /512Gb but decided that just in case we play wow on it a bit more it'd be handy to have a fan to stop throttling - so went for MBP same spec...
memory 16Gb to give WOW breathing room, and also i can afford to increase ram.

Thanks for letting me know.

Others have stated that the Air is more comfortable to type on, so I guess it’s down to preference?

So Calif
I really wanted the M1 replace my aging iMac and 15" MBP.

13" is not going to work for me (old eyes).

So I opted for the base M1 Mini that is now replacing my 2012 i7 Mini Server - that was a huge hit for me.

The only silver lining is that my 2012 Mini CTO/BTO maxed out will fetch $500-$600 on the resale market - enough to almost pay for the $679 M1 Mini!

What‘s your story?

I'd originally ordered the MBA - but ended up with an MBP.

My original choice of the MBA was partly to have the system remain silent, partly because MBAs have usually been cooler in the lap than MBPs, and partly because I really preferred typing on my early 2020 MBA as compared to my 2018 MBP15.

While waiting for shipment of my MBA, reports of the MBPs being silent and cool were showing up. So when found an MBP of the same config available for pickup at a local Apple store so I decided to give it a try and see.

So far:
  • I've found the lack of the MBAs 1-degree slope to be immaterial for me. Typing on my early-2020 MBA and typing on my M1 MBP feels no different - same for sitting in the den with my feet up or sitting at my desk. I think the issue with the MBP15 wasn't the shape but the size and butterfly keyboard.
  • Fan? What fan? Haven't heard the fan on the M1 MBP yet. I supposed if I ever do and it becomes a concern, by then there will be a fan control app to keep it at a silent level of operation.
  • Heat... Practically none. Sitting here at my desk with mail, safari, and a couple other things going but the CPU largely idle, the case temperatures top and bottom are ~76F as measured by my non-contact infrared thermometer. Room temp is 72F.
  • Touchbar - Physical ESC key and setting it to display the Expanded Control Strip solved my issues with touchbar. Then I can get the App Controls if I hold down the Fn key. Best of both worlds if you don't need the tactile feedback of the function keys.
I cancelled my MBA order. Price difference for my config was ~15%. I didn't find any negatives to the MBP vs the MBA for my usage and I'll take the extra thermal headroom of the MBP as well as the various other improvements.

EDIT - forgot to attach what my touchbar setup looks like; it's set up to match my external Apple Magic Keyboard -- thereby solving my 2nd biggest gripe with touchbar (discontinuous user interface). Plus you can tweak it to show other controls if you prefer.

Interesting! I had a MacBook Pro for several weeks a few years ago and the rectangular front edge produced red lines across my palms. Very uncomfortable. Had little or no issue with that with MacBook Airs.

I think this is related to size of hands, whether one is typing on a lap or a desk, hand positioning, whether one is a touch typist or not, and how sensitive one is to these issues.

I could never buy a MacBook Pro again given that front edge!

I think that may have been addressed in the 2016 case changes. Never had that issue with my 2018 MBP15. Certainly have no issue with my M1 MBP. I've also owned Airs including an Early 2020 intel MBA.

I'd suggest having an open mind w.r.t. current model MBP's -- maybe it is indeed still an issue for some folks (say due to hand size).

I’m actually looking forward to getting acquainted with the Touch Bar.
