Hi all,

so I’ve got the M1 iPad pro 12.9” as well as the iPad mini 6.

I’ve only got 1 SIM card.

What do you think ? If you had these 2 devices, which would you take with you, and have the SIM card with you?

I know the obvious answer may be the mini 6, because of the size, and form factor - but at times, when i take this out, I realise that i want to type something or read something, and the mini is just that tad smaller, and of course no keyboard.

The iPad Pro 12.9 on the other hand , with the magic keyboard is amazing to type, but it’s just huge.

Which would you think is better to be ‘5G connected’ , get a SIM card installed and take with you ?

I have the 2021 12.9 and the Mini 6 and would go with the Mini - I purposely bought it for its portability. If I take the 12.9 out, I'll use it with my iPhone as a hotspot if needed.

Well I currently have the 12.9 with cellular. With the Magic/Smart Keyboard, I think having 5G is super convenient in this "laptop" form factor. Cellular connectivity and Apple Pencil are the only things that make iPads better than MacBooks for me personally. So I wouldn't rule it out just because you’re getting an iPad mini.

Yes, I tend to agree. I’ve tried to use both devices interchangeably with cellular connectivity, and somehow I feel that the iPad Pro 12.9 is a tool for productivity and productivity means you’re always been connected to the Internet, and that’s where it shines with cellular ..

The mini works really well pairing with my iPhone anyway, and you’re just doing light browsing at most, so Internet connectivity isn’t it’s most important element IMO

Yea I think it comes down to how productive you want to be with your iPad Pro 12.9.

I can see the appeal in getting cellular for the iPad mini though. It's a really nice on-the-go consumption device. It's also the only iPad that is good for GPS navigation if you don’t want to use up your phone's battery.

I'd say just keep interchanging the SIM card depending on which iPad you're picking up on the day. It's nice to have the flexibility :)

Pro has mmWave 5G, but if it doesn’t go very far because it isn’t that portable, the Mini.

If you are in the US you have additional options. Both of those devices has an esim. You can sign up for T-Mobile's $10 5GB/150 day plan for example. I don't know what works outside of the US.

Well, I use the 12.9 iPP 5G… I carry that around with me on the go along with a magic keyboard. But as you mention it’s huge… I’ve grown accustomed to traveling with that kind of size since Apple introduced the 12.9 iPad Pro (never wavered since 2015).

For me, it doesn’t seem as huge as others might think… but it’s a matter of perspective. And you getting a bigger display with that larger frame.

Between the two, I choose the iPad mini 6. I can easily carry that one around in my purse and use anytime for short bursts (e.g. waiting around at the pharmacy, doctor’s office, etc).

The 12.9 is more of a lug around and then use while sitting in front of a desk rather than for mobile use.

That said, it’s nice to have the T-Mobile $10/5GB/150 day plan as an option for light use (Find My, GPS, light browsing) on other iPads.
