i have last years 11" pro. great device but over the last few months i kept noticing i would get a lock screen saying to input passcode because it had restarted. i never turn my ipad off or reboot it and i don't think they are any settings that cause it to automatically do it. anyway at first i didn't think anything of it so ignored it.

it now seems to be happening more often. two times it has rebooted when i was using it. one time the ipad will froze for a second then went to a black screen before the apple logo appears. the other time it just went to a black screen and apple logo.

i was on iPad 16.1 so thought maybe it's because it's beta software even though it happened when i was on earlier 15 version. i completely reset my ipad to 15.7 to do a clean install and it was fine for a week or so.

this morning i woke up and my ipad was asking for a passcode after restarting. i don't know what else to do now so have booked an appointment at the Apple store for this morning. i can't reproduce it as it happens randomly and maybe every week or so. i hope they can look at crash logs or something and see what's happening.

i know i'm probably looking at a replacement device so hopefully they have one in stock. i have a 256gb grey model. i have AppleCare+

i wanted to post this to see if anyone else is having this problem and to simply document it in case anyone has the issue in the future.

edit: been to the apple store. they checked the logs and there was one for a kernel panic and said it's the cpu or ram that was faulty. got a new replacement :)

I don’t know if this applies to you but Apple did start a new security routine whereby if you don’t touch a device for 1 week, you need to input your passcode.

I don't think the security thing is new. Iirc, iOS devices would ask for the passcode after 48 hours without use.

i might go a couple days without using my ipad but never a week. the guy at the apple store confirmed it was a faulty cpu/ram and was having kernel panics.

yeah i just found this out the other day. i was wondering why i was being asked for my passcode so often so checked online. the difference was that when my ipad was crashing it would restart to a message something like "input passcode required after restart" and not just "to enable face id".

here is a screenshot i took to show apple.

as you can see it turned off around maybe 1:30AM and didn't turn back on until ~6AM. i don't think that's 100% accurate because when i went to use my ipad around 6AM it was turned on with the lock screen. not boot screen. what i think happened is it crashed/rebooted after ~1:30AM (when i was sleeping) and then when i started using my ipad that's when it thought it woke up when most likely it was just after rebooting.

when the apple store employee ran diagnostics he said that it had another kernel panic which confirmed the issue. here is the email i was sent with the notes he made when i was there:
