My 12.9 M1 iPad died AGAIN this evening for the second time. Last week, I replaced my original M1 because it would not turn on. Initially, I thought it had died and I tried charging it with no luck. I went to the Apple Store and even they couldn't fix the issue and they immediately replaced it. Now, this iPad died and the screen will not turn on. I've tried holding the volume and power buttons and connecting it to my MBA and it does not recognize a device is connected. The only issue I can think of is the Beta software. Has anyone had the issue before? I have a genius appointment scheduled for tomorrow for a fix.

I don’t have any real advice as it seems you have done everything other than see if you can let the battery drain out and then plug it in. Sometimes this can bring back a seemingly dead iPad.

I doubt Beta software could cause a hardware failure but it could cause an unbootable state that when power drains completely it will reset.

Other than that I got nothing.

I hope you get one that doesn’t have this issue but if it happens again on another new iPad and you put Beta on it I would say it is a software bug causing the device going into a non bootable state.

Maybe try using non beta software if you have to get a new one and see what happens. Could be an application you are using on beta that is triggering something. Good luck and hope the issue gets resolved.

I have had iPads running beta discharge and die on me while plugged in to the charger. For some reason, it would start charging again only after 1) I unplug the iPad, 2) do a soft reset (volume up, down, lock button), 3) plug it back in while (4) I made sure that the screen had not been turned on (sitting in a case that supports auto wake/sleep.)
I have no idea why, it has happened on multiple iPads, and that has been the only solution I have found that remedies the problem. Hope it helps!

Thanks guys. I will report back tomorrow when I get back from the Apple Store. Next time I will remove the Beta and setup as new.

I have had several iPads turned into me as 'dead' that were only updating while connected to lower spec charging adapter and/or USB-C cables. If you have kept it charged for over 24 hours on an Apple USB-C cable and 20w charger, then I do not know. I would plug it into Apple Configurator to see if I could get console access.

Beta versions of iPadOS may contain firmware upgrades and those can absolutely brick your device.

Update!

I got to the Apple Store and she plugged it in and did a hard reset and it booted up. Talk about embarrassment! I tried all last night and this morning resetting the device with no luck. She was so kind and suggested I remove the Beta and perform a clean install. She also ran diagnostics and saw no red flags there either. I went to check the Beta profile and couldn’t find it although it shows me on iPadOS 16.1.

I’m grateful this is over and I’m definitely not doing beta again on an iPad. I had several intermittent issues with this beta unlike previous betas.

Unless you are an actual developer and using the Beta builds to help optimize or create future software there is always a risk using Beta builds of any OS.

I understand that it is interesting to be able to access the next version of software before it is released and have done so before and know what you are doing but there is always a risk of things being completely unstable and various bugs that cause serious problems.

So maybe it is best to avoid Beta software unless you actually need to use it for a professional purpose which you may have? Maybe wait until late in the development stage so that you can get as stable a release as you can.

Or just stop using the Beta's as you have suggested you will do.

I am very glad you were able to resolve your issues and got your iPad working again.

I like installing Beta software just to preview a new or upcoming OS but I have learned over the years that it is Beta for a reason and I never do it on primary hardware and never for an extended period of time. I check it out see how things work and revert back to a stable release. The Betas always bite you in the butt. Lol
