Have a quad core 2012 Mac Mini. Created time machine backup on Monday. Received 16GB ram version of M1 Mini on Monday that I ordered over a month ago. Busy with work and life until last night, Christmas Eve. Unbox M1 Mini, connect it up to everything, monitors, ethernet, etc, then get to the migration assistant. It does its deal and then I get to: "You are unable to log in to this user account at this time" then another line below "Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred", no error code, no other explanation, generic error.

Apple support could not figure it out last night, and had me go reinstall Big Sur. Told me they'd call me in 20 minutes to check on status and never did. Later last night I get an email that I would receive a call at the time I setup, 9am. But I did not set that up because I was waiting on a call back. I do not wish to troubleshoot your problems on Christmas given a choice. But like an idiot, I get up and ready for this wonderful 9am call as maybe there is a prayer they can get my machine running and not ruin Christmas. It did not occur, they never called, so I called them and got a BS excuse about someone putting an extra "1" before my number. That's a terrible excuse. I've been in IT for over 20 years and that's just an excuse. If someone fat fingered something you could easily figure it out if you can think, or you could just check the layer 8 contact information.

Again with the troubleshooting, this time erase the SSD, and reinstall Big Sur. This time we skip using migration assistant and just try to get into the machine. Use different name, computer name, and password. Another error "Computer account creation failed. Your computer account could not be created with the name and password specified. Please try again." Tried with all sorts of names, passwords, nothing worked. Takes quite a while to error out. I go back in the setup process, and skip logging into apple/icloud, and try to just get into the OS. Nope. Machine is bricked. Apple Support was terrible last night and today. If you don't want to work, then don't work. After this support person tried to get a hold of sales (like a sales department is open on Christmas...they are the first ones to leave the building) and failed it set up another call for tomorrow to return the brick and get my money back. So that will be 3 days in a row of iBrick. 5 hours of my life I won't get back. I bought (2) 4K monitors for this thing and donated my 1080p monitors away so even if/when Apple does refund me, I'm out some serious money as my existing Mini cannot utilize 4k displays. No more brand new Apple products for me. Researching the various issues on the M1's now. I am definitely not alone. Livid. If I could afford to use it in skeet I would. This reminds of me of Microsoft and Windows. It's fun being on support, ahead of them, a senior advisor and having to tell them "I'm already there" and "I've already done that" over and over and over again. It's bricked and they just don't want to accept it. Maybe I got a lemon but Apple support has been atrocious.

Did you try removing the M1 mini from your devices on appleID.apple.com and then reinstalling the OS? If not, try that as it should work. If all support had you do was erase the drive and reinstall, that was doomed to fail, unfortunately.
Yes. Or follow the instructions in step 1 of this thread to erase the Mac and start over.

Kind of a dramatic thread title, don’t you think? You have a tech problem that will get fixed, not a brick.

I have a product problem. No drama. When you use time machine, do everything that Apple says to a letter, concerning transferring machines one to other, and they whole thing bricks, and is unusable, that’s a brick to me. It’s bricked. I haven’t even seen Big Sur yet. It should not be the consumer’s job to go through all this hassle to get their product working. None of this is that complex yet Apple is making it so. Apple is producing the drama, I surely am not. What a headache and it’s going back. Corporations don’t learn any lessons unless it costs them money.

Here's a helpful video if, as Quackers notes, you can indeed physically connect your Mac's.

2012 Mac Mini does not have USB-C. Also impossible to hold the power button on the Mac Mini, and press all those keys at the same time. You’d need two people. And with a Bluetooth keyboard, ain’t happening anyway.

(a) You can use USB-A to USB-C cable. 2012 mini on USB-A end, M1 mini on USB-C end.

(b) That "Vulcan death grip" keys combination is only needed for M1 laptops. Different method for M1 mini.

I had this error when I reinstalled Big Sur on my M1 mini. You could try this:
  • Turn it off, then hold the power button until you get the screen with the startup disk and another icon called "Options". Choose that.
  • If you was able to create an account before it failed, enter the username and password if you get that prompt.
  • You should get the Restore/Reinstall window. Don't click on that, but go to the menu and chose Utilities -> Terminal, and then write resetpassword
  • A new window appears, in the top left menu go to and select Erase Mac and confirm.
  • Let it do its thing, and it should return to the Restore/Reinstall window.
  • Again go to the menu and open the terminal as in the previous step, write resetpassword and chose Erase Mac once more.
  • When Restore/Reinstall window reappears select Reinstall macOS Big Sur, if the installer don't start automatically.
If at any time Restore/Reinstall don't appear in this sequence, turn off and hold power button to get to the options. If you don't have the username and password, you have to go to Apple to sort this out.

Thank you. I had another scheduled call with Apple today. Initial tech/csr knew what was up and didn't put me through it. They got me over to a sme in bus&ed who was specific to Apple Configurator. I think was his 1st or 2nd time with this issue. Your (a) worked but not without trial and error. M1 used the usb-c on the left or closest to power source. 2012 Quad Core Mini, USB-A #4 would not work, but #3 would. Then it was specific instructions to remove power cable from M1 mini, wait 10 seconds, then hold power down, and insert power cable back into M1 Mini. This did not work at all the first two tries, but the third was successful. DFM mode I think it was called, and the power light went red instead of white. We got it into the mode, and then did migration assistant. Luckily, my T7 SSD that I just bought for this thing, came included with usb-c to usb-c cable, and usb-c to usb-a cable. And I've ready that Apple, won't let this functionality work if it does not like the cable. Thank the Lord that I had this cable and the OS/hardware synced up and used it or I would been DOA and it would have been shipped back to them.

My quad core Mini, has 2 internal drives, 1 ssd that has OS and progs. The HDD has all my files, home folder etc. Tech said a bug in 11.0.1 (when we got the OS on the M1 Mini finally, it was definitely 11.1 and no OS updating needed) and said that was issue #1. Issue #2 is how I had it configured with the two drives, my file storage, etc. Time Machine or migration assistant, one or both had an issue with this hence all the subsequent issues. But the bug in 11.0.1 is what put me through first world hell.

I'm waiting on a call later today from a sme in Apple OS (Not Apple Support or anyone that works for them) to get my M1 internal SSD and my external SSD set up the same way as the old machine then I can format both drives in the 2012 Quad Core.

Clusterf but glad some members pushed me to stick with it. I thank you members who said so above. I was ready to ship this mf back as I did everything I was supposed to do correctly, regarding Time Machine backup, etc, to the point he (friend/sme) was on the phone with me so I'd have a babysitter so to speak who was a SME. This was his first time dealing with the M1 and he was none too pleased and pretty pissed he couldn't get me through this. Researching and seeing many people with while not the same issue, but something awfully similar, well all I can say is not me. That's a bug in Big Sur and a big PITA for me. But hopefully all will be rectified 100, later today.

If you have this issue, and are going to use Apple Support for anything, make sure you mandate you want an Apple Configurator SME in Business and Education. The guy I got knew his S, and could tell he's old school Apple support, the real kind I always got calling them for anything. They knew their stuff, could trial and error and get stuff running properly. The clowns I dealt with on Christmas and Christmas Eve are glorified secretaries to me, and there just to answer the phone. Even the "2nd Level" or whatever they are called, senior people, were clowns. Guy I got today, wish I could buy that man something, a case a beer, a gift certificate, anything. This "bug" bit my A hard. Sent me over the edge because I lost my mother a month ago to Covid. That ruined a vacation that was supposed to be the one of my life. Then HVAC issues at the house, then plumbing issues at the house, and some more issues that I won't go into. I'm like mf, a simple PC upgrade, and all this bs? Are you kidding me Apple? Even my friend SME who is Appleman afaiac, said "Apple really needs to get their S together with this new chipset. This is ridiculous!"

Thank you for the replies.

Glad to hear you're nearly sorted out now but it wasn't as bleak as you'd imagined.
It was never likely to be DOA if you couldn't connect two Macs together.
You'd have just needed to move on to repair method number 2 of the link posted earlier.
If that hadn't worked you could have gone to No 3 in that page :)

Anyway, glad you're on the road to recovery.

ps I'm not sure you can split the basic user folders off to another drive/volume but I'm sure Apple will clear that up.
Good luck.

a simple PC upgrade, and all this bs? Are you kidding me Apple?

I agree that Apple software quality is not solid lately.

That said, it was never a simple PC upgrade.

(a) You have a fusion/not-fusion 2 drives setup in 2012 mini (supposedly running Catalina or Mojave)

I'm waiting on a call later today from a sme in Apple OS (Not Apple Support or anyone that works for them) to get my M1 internal SSD and my external SSD set up the same way as the old machine
**** Don't go down this route. Custom sh*t like this will cause pain in future.

(b) New M1 machines are first gen with new architecture requiring many changes to macOS. On top of the many changes under the hood with macOS going from Mojave to Catalina to Big Sur

Both (a) and (b), would have steered me not to use migration assistant.

Big Sur alone is enough for me to do clean install and start afresh.

I agree that Apple software quality is not solid lately.
The same was said in Catalina
The same was said in Mojave
The same was said in High Sierra
The same was said in Sierra
The same was said in the last 3 OS's before HS.

This same line of text is just becoming an automatic regurgitation with no true meaning or explanation.

And experience with Migration assistant has always been spotty. Over the years, in my previous uses it worked may be 90% of time well, really well. In the other ~10% of times it failed - often with destructive outcomes. After reformat, same system install and same Migration assistant use all ended up well, really well. Go figure... So doing twice the same thing DID have different outcome. Why? No idea, but it is what it is. It mostly works really well, but fails sometimes.

Would have thought someone so experienced would have:

(a) Read up a little on any issues with new M1 Macs before going full steam ahead
(b) Done a clean setup instead of migration assistant

And if it failed:

(c) Know how to google for fix, like the Apple Configurator 2 route

A) I'm busy. It's not my job to manage Apple/Mac like this. I've had a metric ton of things going on in my life. Covid death to my only family member. HVAC issues. Plumbing issues. Equipment issues (non-PC). Working on a new surveillance system for my home. No time for much else over the past month and that was my waiting time from order.
B) Defeats the purpose of using time machine then.
C) Apple can fix it. It's not my job or DIY to fix their hardware/software that fails or f's up. It's my job when the machine has aged some. Not right out of the box. This is the exact type of S why I left MS for home computing. I'm not Apple worshipper. I use their product because it's the lesser of two evils.

Yeah for 6 years I've run my home folder on my secondary drive. I've never been a fan of storing files on the same drive as the OS and apps. My preference is to always store files such as docs, music, photos, and any videos to an external or secondary drive. I was advised today that Apple is adding more security and having that home folder on a secondary, or in my case, external drive, may cause issues in the future. I did not like hearing that. Apple charges a hefty tax for GB's and for my use, I'm only going to run the OS and apps on the internal drive. File storage, of any kind, I want on another drive. Without moving that home folder to my external SSD, I'm at a loss on how to do what I want. This M1 is 250GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM. I have no need for additional hard drive space on the internal drive because I'm not going to store anything on it. So now I'm going to have to try and figure out how to use the OS and have it store documents, photos, Itunes library, all on my external drive without moving the home folder to the external SSD. Apple either wants you to buy GB/TB from them alone, and/or use iCloud. What got me to migrate to Apple in the first place was that quad core Mac Mini where I could add a 2nd hard drive, increase the RAM on my own, etc, which is exactly what I did, and it has worked outstanding. When I bought it, in 2014, I added a SSD (128Gb Crucial), and moved the OS over to it. Then used the Apple HDD for all file storage. Then I hooked up an external HDD to use as a time machine backup. Has worked very well. Now I must change and figure out how to do what I want, while dealing with Apple control.

I hope everyone who needs help reinstalling gets help through Apple Support or a Apple Store genius. They need to fix their broken software and quickest way to get a company to do what they should do is to make it expensive if they don't.

Fair enough if that's what you want.
From time to time changes are forced upon us and we have to adapt. It doesn't necessarily mean it's worse - just different.
If you're still in the initial window you can return it without giving any reason if you don't want to.
It might have been better to consider these factors before you bought one though :)
