Hi all :)

I bought a new M1 Mac mini a few days ago and I had a couple of Kernel panics with this stacktrace: https://ybin.me/p/28343b81bdec1950#TPNj4Ub869FFKhJKKvsp4+wepOMZ4gjJ4aHpuWWyE0w=

From the very few results on Google I suspect that it's related to HDMI, and in fact I have a single display currently connected via HDMI, while waiting for a newer display which I will use as primary - I will still use the secondary via HDMI as it is now.

Is anyone else having these issues with displays connected to HDMI? Is there anything I can try to solve this issue?

Thanks!

My monitor will not connect over the HDMI port. It does connect if I use a USB C Hub with HDMI on it. This monitor works with several other devices, I have never had a computer not work with it. When I have it plugged in to HDMI, my M1 Mini sees the monitor and even knows exactly what it is and is even correctly set at the right resolution and frequency by default. My monitor just says some message about the timing is incorrect. I was using Side Car to confirm all of this as obviously I can't see the screen if my monitor isn't working. The same thing in firmware boot, safe boot, etc. My TV works fine with the HDMI.

Also, I have a generic Micro Center USB Stick that I used to use for Time Machine. This M1 Mac cannot detect this USB Stick at all. The strange thing is I have isolated that while this USB Stick is plugged in my Mac has Kernel Panics. I even installed a fresh OS on a separate APFS Volume and the same thing occurs.

I should probably call Apple, but I definitely have done all the troubleshooting at this point.

Yes, I bought a M1 Mac Mini yesterday as a home media computer. It had kernal panic while in sleep mode and restarted. I also had a kernel panic with my M1 MBP a day after I bought it in November while I was using it for 3 hours and lost some of my work. Both connected to a monitor at the time.

So far not very happy with M1 release. My MBP also has bluetooth & wifi issues.

From the stack trace you posted, it looks like it crashed with something called DCP Connect? There is also an audio/dsp device involved. It doesn't look to me like it has anything to do with HDMI. I'm not an expert though so I could easily be wrong.

I have my M1 mini connected to a HDMI monitor and had a KP this morning.
That's saying something... without saying anything. In other words, vague-central. Describe the circumstances of your problem. What brand of monitor/HDMI cable are you using? What length? Are you running Big Sur 11.0.0 or 11.0.1 or a beta? What were you doing prior to the KP? What software was loaded/running (and is it/are they M1-native or running in Rosetta 2)? Was it asleep or running a screen saver? Is the airflow vent in back blocked? Is your M1 MM (Mac Mini) plugged into the wall or a surge protected power strip? Etc. ad nauseum. Unless you know how to interpret the KP messages, you need to be as specific as possible if anyone is going to have a hope of helping you effectively. I plan to do likewise, if I should have anything similar happen.

As a side-note, I run my computers full blast (100% performance all the time), no sleep (except the monitor), no hard drive sleep. That tends to resolve any sluggish/glitchy behavior... at least in Windows 10 (Asus ROG Zepyrus G laptop) and MacOS X 10.3.9 (G4 QuickSilver). ;)

HDMI carries audio AFAIK

The monitor is an old Acer K272HL and I was using the HDMI cable I got with the XBOX 360 years ago and that I had never used before this. The cable is 1-1.5m long. I am running Big Sur 11.1 Beta (the problem occurred before the upgrade too). I usually have several apps open, and the problem occurred during sleep. I went to wake up the computer only to find out that it had crashed overnight. The airflow is not blocked and the Mini is plugged to a wall socket.

Power fluctuations could have caused the KP. If the M1 Mac Mini is set to come back on after a power outage, a power blip could have left the system in an unstable condition, thus causing the KP. Running a beta of an OS is likely to be rife with possible issues. I never run a beta of my main OS. You’re running on the “bleeding edge“, by running a beta of Big Sur, which has already been shown to have problems right out of the gate.

Of course, what apps were running at the time of the crash and were they all M1 native (not running under Rosetta 2), or were any M1-native betas (“beta” status possibly yielding issues)?

Hi I'm curious if you are still seeing this problem? I had my 8/256 Mac Mini M1 for almost two weeks without this issue. I recently got the 16/512 Mac Mini to try and I'm starting to get this kernel panic basically every day. Any luck?

I'm wondering if a newer HDMI cable would help?

Hi, surprisingly it hasn't happened anymore. Boh ?
Until yesterday I still had the Acer connected to HDMI and the new BenQ to USB-C to DisplayPort. The kernel panics stopped even though nothing changed for the Acer. But I was still having issues with the displays not always waking up from sleep. So now I have the Acer connected to the computer with a DisplayLink adapter, and I am going to try to switch the BenQ to HDMI when I receive the cable. Dunno.... just trying combinations to fix these issues. But the panics/crashes seem to have stopped for some reason.

Thanks for getting back, there is a similar thread that people are discussing this similar topics on:

I have so far turned off the sleep, and SO FAR it seems to have worked. Just got on the computer this morning and was finally not greeted by the stupid reboot login screen. Like I wrote on the other post, I'm okay if this is a hardware issue, but I'm really hoping his is not a hardware issue was I didn't get this at all with my base 8/256 Mini.

Can you how me the Dsiplaylink adapter and the HDMI that you have purchased? I wonder if I should grab a new HDMI just to try? This HDMI to HDMI cable that I'm using is a very old one as far as I know.

This is the adapter that I bought with DisplayLink chipset: https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B076SX73LY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I am using a 1080p monitor with it so it's enough, but if you use a monitor with higher resolution you need to buy a more expensive adapter or hub with newer chipset. I got the other cable now so I have primary BenQ connected directly to the HDMI port of the mini, and the secondary Acer to USB/DisplayLink. I am hoping this solves the sleep/wake issues.

BTW I still put the computer to sleep at night. During the day I keep it active with Amphetamine and just trigger the screensaver when I am away from the computer.
