Set it up from scratch and I got a notification that the 5 stock apps (Garage Band, etc.) need updating. Tried updating and all I'm getting are spinning grey circles. No progress after an hour. Is it just me or is anybody else having this issue? My home internet gets 230mbs download so I don't think that's the issue.

Nevermind, I noticed there was an update to Big Sur. Updated and now it's working fine, strange.

I just received my macbook air yesterday and I'm having the same issue. However, my Mac shows that it's up to date.

I had the same problem but the following procedure corrected it for me. Use Spotlight to search for Activity Monitor (or open it directly from Applications--Utilities). In Activity Monitor, use the top right search box and search for 'storeagent'. Click on 'appstorereagent' and then click on the menu bar icon represented by circle with an X inside. This will force quit this process. The system will automatically relaunch it when you open the App Store again. You will most likely need to reconnect to your account, but now the updates and downloads should work again from the App Store.

App Store wasn't working on my M1 Mini and cMP4,1 but when I turned off Firewall in System Preferences it worked again on both machines (Big Sur and Mojave).

I had the same problem with updating those 5 stock Apple apps on my brand new m1 mba yesterday. Totally new computer, no data migration. First ting I did was update from 11.0.1 to 11.1. Hours later it said I had updates in the app store. Those 5 stock apps in the app store would just circle and never download/update.

I had to sign out of my Apple ID, deleted ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore and com.apple.appstoreagent.
Rebooted. sign back into Apple ID and it fixed it.

I wonder how many people will get new laptops this Christmas and have to deal with this crap out of the box.

Thanks that did it! I updated to the latest MacOS first so maybe that is why I could not download apps, but you really helped!! Thanks!
