Maybe a coinsidence, but after upgrading to 12.3, my M1 MacBook Pro hangs (spinner mouse pointer), all the time. It is nearly unusable. I'm still new to Macs so I don't quite know how to troubleshoot as I would in Windows. Activity Monitor does seem to show anything interesting. Even when it is spinning I don't see any CPU spikes or memory increases. I looked in Console and saw something called Spin Reports. This seemed promising, but there isn't any there. I probably just don't know how to use it.

1) Has anyone else experienced this?
2) Any common troubleshooting steps I can take?

Im on an M1 iMac (wishing I had waited for the Mac Studio!). Im noticing a lot of lag that wasn't there before the update to 12.3. I wiped my iMac and then restored from 12.2ish before the upgrade to 12.3

Experiencing similar issues here as well since update. Wifi dropping, preference panel freezing, restart won't work...so hard reboot is required...and then all is fine again for a bit.

Same issues here, since 12.3, issues start appearing with Safari (pages/images stop loading), Music app (freezes), etc.. after rebooting all is fine but same issues reappear after some time.

Kind of feels like something network related, maybe some bug, haven't been able to figure out any solution yet.

Same exact thing happening to two machines 13" and 15" mid 2015 MacBook Pros. Apps hang with spinning beachball. Can quit some after difficulty, but eventually not even force quitting helps as the Force Quit window itself will hang. Only hard reset / restart gets me out of it and to a usable desktop again. Has happened a handful of times so far after updating to 12.3. Zero issues prior to that time.

Any chance everyone is using Microsoft Office or have it running in the background (Outlook, Teams, etc.)? I'm trying to see if it only happens when I'm working and have Office open.

Not using any of that here, it’s something else and only started happening after installing 12.3 on my M1 Pro.

Happening to me too on 12.2.1 on an i9 iMac.

Thought I'd pinned it down to a Chrome and/or Bluetooth issue but the jury is still out.

On a M1 Air, noticed yesterday when trying to reload this site, sometimes youtube that it’ll want to start but but just hangs. (But in other tabs other sites would reload)
Trying to reload on ipad pro at the same time it didn‘t.

12.3 bricked both my machines, my M1 MBP won't even load it, and it's super buggy on the machine I managed to get it loaded onto. What a terrible iteration of this software. I've never had an iterative upgrade destroy so much stuff. I've spent three days trying to reclaim files and reload the OS. MAJOR FAIL

My 16" MBP is a pain in the ass, I have to restart, stop copying and start over, quit Safari due to pages not loading and the dreaded spinning wheel way to often. 64GB ram 8TB SSD so its not that. Not running any goofy 3rd party other than Topaz Labs denoise and sharpen. We need a fix asap this sucks I use this for my businesses and everything I do.

Maybe try running "Maintenance" after the update. Mine was also doing some of these same things after the update, but this fixed it.

I may have narrowed my issues down to Mega links in Chrome and, to a lesser extent, Safari. So probably a separate issue to others.

After upgrade to 12.3 my M1 Macbook Air exhibits similar symptoms as discussed in this thread: applications unresponsive and eventually inability to even restart the computer (requiring hard reboot via power button). I does not seem to be directly caused by networking, because the machine responds to pings, Universal Control works (which I believe uses AWDL), SSH connection to the box connects, but the remote shell is never started. While in this state, already running applications not requiring start of additional processes/threads (or possibly memory allocations) seem to continue working (for example, iStats menubar widgets), however the system is not able to start any new process. The problem is occurring relatively infrequently (about every 3 days). It just occurred when the machine was sleeping :-(.
I also have M1 MacBook Pro which I've also upgraded to 12.3 and I'm not seeing the problem there (at least not yet). The are occassional hiccups and even beachballs that never happened before 12.3 upgrade, but I've not seen a complete lock-up like on the Air. The only difference between those 2 machines (other than the hardware) is that the Air is connected to Apple Thunderbolt display (using Apple USB-C/Thundebolt2 adapter) while the Pro is connected to OWC Thunderbolt docking station and Samsung monitor (via DisplayPort on the docking station). Both Macbooks are connected to the same Gigabit Ethernet switch and also to the same Wifi Aiport base station.

Same problems on my MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) M1... Worked great before 12.3 update. Now, the music app keeps hanging and other laggy experiences.

I am facing similar issues on my Mac studio. Random freezes, the airdrop window doesn’t respond sometimes, many apps just randomly crash. Mainly Davinci. Safari stops loading websites. This is on a fresh install with just 5 apps installed.

This is so painful. I've tried so many things to try to find the issue. My latest theory is that it is Microsoft Defender. My system was hanging, so I stopped it's real-time scan and my system became responsive again. I've uninstalled it now, so I'll see if that does the trick. I don't think I'll be able to access my work resources anymore though...

I did see a release note from Microsoft where they added support for Mac OS 12.3 in a specific version. In that note they said that you have to update Defender before updating your OS. I'm not sure if my was auto updated, but I certainly didn't do it manually.

OK now I think it's just Chrome, and any large (several hundred MB) download, not just Mega. Has been happening the past couple of versions.

Well... I've gone 24 hours without a hang after removing Microsoft Defender. I'm pretty confident that was my issue. Seems like a number of different causes that I'm seeing through this thread. I'd love to know if anyone else has Microsoft Defender with 12.3 and whether or not they're having any issues.

Got the exact same problem + Kernel Panics (restarted) when mac in sleep and opening the lid after a while. Anyone found the problem for this?

As stated in another thread, my KPs turned out to be due to a failing HD. I only stumbled on to that due to some third-party disk maintenance utilities, though I had had some trouble with corrupted files. Had the HD replaced under warranty and now all is well.

Good luck to everyone else!
