Hello all,

I wanted to have your view - I have a M1 MAX 24 core, 32Gb 14inch. Great machine but since I purchased it, I noticed that battery runs out quickly (with half brightness and simple safari browsing) - I also noticed that looking at the battery stats, there is consumption while on standby.

My main question is - could this be due to the fact that I built this machine using my previous Time Machine backup that I first started in 2009 and then used each time I moved to a new macbook throughout the years. Could it be due to old libraries / software inherited throughout the years?

I know it's a complex scenario but I wanted to hear your ideas/experience.

Cheers

Could be. What are the top consumers of CPU Time and GPU Time in your Activity Monitor? Should be kernel_task, WindowServer and your most used apps.

My similar model lasts 9-10 hours. During sleep it costs 5% battery per night (15 hours).

Sounds like applications or other processes are "running in the background" and using up energy, particularly if you let it sleep at night, rather than power down.

For comparison - my 15inch M1 Pro with 32GB RAM averages around 5W (iStatMenu reporting) on battery, with 1/2 brightness, and nothing major running or connected. This means I do get the 18-20hours on battery as advertised. If your power requirements are significantly higher, you should start looking in what it is. You can figure out (with some serious work) what is running in standby and what is waking it up. Sometimes you have iCloud problems or some other process is misbehaving.
I setup this as new, copying only documents folder and setting all up as new. Wanted to avoid any crud from nearly decade of migrating to be transferred.
When I do some serious computing, battery life goes down a lot, even below 10h. But that is expected if I load it with some real work ;-) If I run screen 100%, battery life goes really down and I can get to 6-8 hours.
