Curious why the discrepancy here. I was searching around for the M1 max 64gb 1TB silver variant but I only see the space gray as an option in apple refurb store, and to be clear it's sold out there. I know this model exists as an employer gave it to me recently but was thinking of maybe picking up a personal version myself as well.

The refurb store only sells what Apple has to sell, so it is not unusual for some colors to be there and others not, just the same as stock sells out and there's a delay before more comes in.

I'd guess that darker colors may be more prevalent in the refurb store with laptops because when first purchased, some owners decide they don't like the visibility of fingerprints, so return them more frequently.

Ah thanks. Are people even still able to buy the M1 max off apple's store though and thus return it to replenish the refurb store? Even the refurb watchers only showed the gray color so that surprised me.

I don't know exactly how the process works, but I don't think Apple rotate stock out to refurb in 'real time', and there may be added delay if, for example, they are keen for existing new stock in the supply channel to clear first.

But I don't think it's unusual for the darker colors to show up in the refurb store more often/greater quantity, since they do tend to be fingerprint magnets.

Things come and go at the online refurbished store.

"What they have in stock" at any given moment is what they have.
Come back a day or two later, and it will be different.

Apple hasn't sold M1 Max laptops new since January 2023. The refurbished inventory could also include trade-ins, but it's not likely that many more M1 Max configurations will appear there.
