m1 max dimming itself to complete blackness for no reason

my computer is plugged in, I'm in a bright room, I'm actively using the computer, and for some reason the auto brightness just makes the screen dim completely? and this is happening repeatedly making the computer a complete pain to use.

Auto-brightness is a pain. I turn it off as soon as I get a new machine.

But that doesn't sound normal, if it's going all the way off.

yeah. it just started doing it. so I don't know if its some glitch that can be fixed with a reset. although it'll suck if it just keeps popping up. and on my 2018 MacBook Pro, True Tone was unusable the entire life of the machine because of how it made the display freak out and flicker.
