I thought I give it a shot to create some music videos for a couple of songs I made with Davinci Resolve (free version). But I notice that the playback is not butter smooth. I thought the M1 Max was supposed to be a beast for video editing?

Is this normal for the playback to not be butter smooth on a M1 Max for 4K (Ultra HD) projects?

If I downgrade it to Full HD (1080p), it runs much better. But I thought the M1 Max would steam roll threw everything for video editing.

What codec is your footage using? Some (particularly drone footage) can struggle on the fastest computers.

Check that you have the GPU configured correctly in Resolve, e.g. on my M1 Mac

Before you change your source video resolution, you can change the timeline resolution (not sure if this is what you meant by "downgrade to FHD"), or use "Timeline Proxy Mode" to half or quarter resolution.

Of course, you can also use proxies or optimised media by transcoding. You will get the advantage of the M1 Max hardware codecs if you transcode to ProRes.

Hello UBS28:

I use my 2021 MBP Max, 32 core, 64 GB machine with DaVinci Resolve. My videos are from a FujiFilm X-T3, UHD, HEVC, 23.978 FPS and a Phantom 4 Pro. DaVinci Resolve and DaVinci Resolve Studio both allow me smoothly edit videos without file optimization and not using half or quarter resolution. I also am able to rapidly track geometric masks.

Magic Mask does not work well. Playback rate is probably only about 3 or 4 FPS. Maybe there is more optimization that BMD can do to improve. But this is a very demanding application. I would expect only the most capable studio machines to be able to do this well. We may need more horsepower from Apple in a later iteration of AS to be able to edit with Magic Mask.

Thanks. I got the same answer from an other forum. So i will change the codec and hopefully the performance improves.
