Got an new M1 MBP and love it. But when I open the lid after several hours of not using it I can hear a faint noise from the right hinge. Sounds like a little popping noise... had an Apple service provider checking it. He said that almost all of them have it and that I shouldn't worry 'cause it is not affecting functionality therefore no need to repair. Do you thing he's right? THX for your expertise.

Your Mac hinge should not be making a popping noise when not being used. In fact, your Mac should not be making any popping noise at all. That isn’t normal. Are you sure it is the hinge and not something else?

Could you post a video of it if possible?

Pretty damn sure. Support guy said the same. So it has to be dead silent while you open it? It is very faint… but it is there.

Your OP said you are hearing it even when the Mac isn[‘t being touched. If that is correct, that is not normal. If you are only hearing it when you open the lid, there have been a few reports on the forum of the same thing.

I am hearing it only when I open the lid. Tried to catch it on video but it doesn’t come out. So is it normal that the hinge can make a faint sound when not being used for several hours?

I wouldn’t say it is normal. However, the Few reports I saw on the forum stated that when the lid was being opened, it would press very slightly against the plastic part on the bottom front area of the screen.

Sounds more like a faint friction within the hinge. Apple said they wouldn't bother to repair. Can you link the discussion you mentioned? Is your MBA dead silent when you open it?

Surperrens, what did you do with the noise? How is it after 3 years?
gotta ask my eldest son since he hijacked the MBP went off with it to college 🤣 got a brand new M4MBP. And guess what: When you close the lid after being fully opened, there is a slight clicking sound from the left hinge. 🤪 maybe give it some time to break in.

Ok, thanks!
I am waiting !
Well it is still there….sometimes…. Guess I’ll live with it since the device is fine otherwise. It is already my second unit. The first one had problems with the screen coating so I swapped it. Maybe it is the hinge or maybe the screen sometimes clicking very faintly…. who knows.
What would you do? Keep it as well?

Well, I will keep it.
The hinge is also stiff when I opened it after some days. In other words I must keep one finger on the mac when I lift the screen, to stay on the table. After that the hinge is fine.
I can blame the humidity of Asia, since I am traveling here now.
I can update you after I turn back to my hometown.

Good. What would you do in my case? Keep it as well?

If it does not agravate, I would keep it.
Mine, I will leave it as it is as well.
But mine is new. If it will agravate, I ll send it to warranty

So no damage or defect?
I’d be worried the hinge is clipping the video cable or something. I just opened/closed the lid on mine multiple times with my ear right up to it and it’s silent with zero clicking. If it’s easily repeatable, bring it to the Genius Bar and have them examine it.
