Around half the time if my Macbook Pro goes to sleep and I try to wake it up, I get a black screen. If I shine a light, you can tell the screen is on so it seems to be the backlight not turning on. The touchbar and keyboard lights up, but adjusting brightness on the touchbar does nothing. If I restart, or let it go back to sleep and restart it, it seems to work, leading me to think this is a software issue. I do not have external monitors connected.

I have tried resetting the SMC by shutting the laptop off for 30 seconds, as well as resetting the NVRAM by "sudo nvram -c". None of this has helped. Any ideas?

Here is a thread of someone else with the issue: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252205798
I have heard of one person who had the issue fixed on 11.2, but I have updated to 11.2 and the issue still occurs.

Yes I have this issue. Brought up quite a few times here. Pretty annoying. Only fix is to disconnect and reconnect the USB connection to the display adaptor hub

The display adaptor hub? I am talking about the internal macbook screen

Mine is having the same problem and probably worse than you. My touch bar backlight is gone after sleep mode, and when I click shut down, the screen is black, but the keyboard still on, then it starts to restart and report an error. Found this issue after two weeks Of using it. I've followed every apple support suggestion, but the problem always happens, in the end, they suggested me to take my mac to a service center, and I did. I hope they fix it. Guess you should take your mac to the service center immediately since this issue cannot be resolved by updating nor reinstall the os.

Necro to check for updated solutions? I have extended apple care+. It does seem like a dead backlight on the internal display.
