If you’re an Apple fanboy or someone who loves the new M1, did I bait you well enough to come to my post? :D
Because the lack of performance in the M1 isn’t what depresses me, it’s the abundance of it.

Here you see two benchmarks side by side. On the left is my custom built Windows PC (circa 2014) and on the right is the MacBook Air (not mine, still waiting on shipping to hurry up).
This depresses me because my desktop has been my lovable monster for the past 6 years, and is still my daily gaming rig. I spent over $2500 on it at the time of building, and the little >3lb cutie pie beats this full tower by 3x the score.
Specs on desktop:
i7 3770k
GTX 680
16GB DDR3 RAM
1TB 7200RPM HDD

I am planning on building a new rig from the ground up in 2021, and was curious how my current baby held up against my soon-to-be-new laptop. And it made me sad. XD

Haha, I knew that’s what this thread was referring to. Yeah...

The $999 MacBook Air is one of the best values in the computing world right now. It is affordable and its performance is better than PCs sold for 3x as much.
Arguably the best value laptop of all time, in terms of launch day price.

I’ve been trying to think of a competing one. Maybe a Core 2 Duo Windows laptop? A CPU upgradable Thinkpad could be if not for I don’t think those were ever sold cheap enough to match this value. Or maybe a specific OEM’s Ryzen 4000U-series laptop, but up until now I’ve not heard of one that is noticeably lacking in some way.

The only reason it depresses me is because I don't have one yet (waiting for M1X/M10 or whatever they'll call it 16").

I understand that this is a transition and that the M1 probably won't ever end up in the 16" because the M1 is their "entry-level" chipset (can't believe the performance of their entry-level chipset beats my current 16" in most aspects).

Patiently waiting until they update the 4 port 13" and 16" Macbook. I'd be fine with an M1 inside a 16" but Apple not having released a version like that also makes me more curious and excited as to what their other chipsets will perform like.
I actually might pick up a M1 Mini just to still my hunger and make the waiting a little more bearable, haha.

Apple went ahead of competition big time. That MBA is gonna be fighting with Intel desktops for years.

EDIT: I had the same reaction when I compared it to my 6C/12T Xeon X5650@4Ghz. ?

Well, my R data transformation scripts run faster on M1 under Rosetta than on a 16" i9 natively... this laptop builds software extremely fast and never even gets warm. I spend last couple of hours installing multiple open-source packages from source, benchmarking games and doing other stuff — and I am still on 80% battery. This is quite ridiculous.

Yea but it's six years old. I mean I'm sorry but...
? I know, I’m well aware! It’s got some mileage on it, which is why I’m planning on building a new one. It‘s just crazy to think how great it was at the time I built it, but now I look at this giant tower and think “holy crap, that tiny and fanless laptop has triple the performance.

What impresses me the most in using my little MacBook Pro 16GB 2TB is how effortless it feels. It is super responsive and things just happen quickly.
Thx. Did you test the SDD? How fast is it?

Also curious, when did you order? How long did it take to get the machine? TIA
