M1 Pro and Max owners with 14/16 inch MBP's, with the announcement of the new M4 Pro and M4 Max models do you feel the need to upgrade or are you happy with your M1 based model?

Anyone think its still too early to upgrade or hold out for M5?

Thoughts, comments?

I am upgrading from M1 Max but mostly to use that machine as an upgrade for my spouse (who has 13" 2019 Intel MBP). Without that need I'd probably wait another generation or two.

Still this is a pretty sizeable upgrade. I'm moving to M4 Pro 14" 48GB/2TB.

I'll be updating - more to move to a lighter 14 inch and downgrading to M4 Pro - will do 48 gb of RAM and 2 TB just to give it more longevity. Moving from a 16 inch M1 Max - but I commute / travel frequently and the weight of the 16 inch is getting to me. If I didn't have the commute - I would just keep the M1 Max longer - another 1 or 2 generations.

So saw a guy who order 10K AUD new MBPs - they are doing phd and running 90gb LLMs in RAM. That is a fair deal!

Me? Thinking left and right for 30 minutes, i absolutely see no reason to update my M1 Air and M1 Pro MBP 14.

M1 Air - best device to use, gives me no lags with 8gb of RAM and still holds all day battery after 4 years. I buy xbox games using VPN, so the Air m1 is the last only apple device to support outdated l2tp vpn share - i connect ethernet and share wifi on my xbox. I don't want to break this configuration and seek for vpn router and set that up.

MBP 14 Pro M1 Pro - in all honesty that is too much power already for what i do. I do fairly quite more than average user, but hover around 12GB on win and mac laptops.

TLDR: I would rather spend these money to see my family or take them on vacation or buy mtb bikes for our outdoor weekends.
TLDR2: I will probably ride out my M1 Air and MBP 14 until the wheels fall off, cause absolutely no point in upgrading for me in terms of the workload. If i overgrow their specs, then of course sure, but not until then. By then probably we will be talking about M8 laptops over here when mine will be done.

I can't get my M1 Pro 14" (10/16 core) to choke on anything significantly. That said I would love to see how the new base 14" M4 benchmarks.
it benchmarks at around +100% across the board but the question is will you notice it?

Just found the first one which has the numbers from what all the youtubers and news showing to M4 ipads.
This is the iPad M4 chip? I would think the MBP M4 notebook chip would have a lot more thermal headroom not to mention a fan. I guess we'll know soon enough. Looks like a beast though.

It is for sure another notable leap and supercycle in history of M chips. Probably the only first chip which makes the sense to jump from M1s.

Usually the laptop version doesn't change much because they are not thermally constrained for short benchmark burst. So one could expect a jump in single core from 2300 to 3900 which is massive, given that most day to day tasks are done on a single core speeds. This is not quite double the performance, but very close.

No with the memory choice restrictions, it seems that if you need 64GB of memory you need to go with the more expensive chip (Max 40 core GPU) even if the Mac mini has the option for the Pro chip! It's ridiculous that even the Max entry model can only be configured to 36GB. I really hope it's a mistake in the site and not an apple decision.

I’m in the fence. I have the 10 core M1 Pro and I’m mostly still happy with it. The battery is aging a bit. And only 16gb of RAM is noticeable on heavier multitasking days, but it works well otherwise.

If I do upgrade it’ll be after reviews and maybe after we see some discounts start coming.

Still on the fence though.

I thought feelings might be mixed as I suspected many people's 3 year Apple Care was running out if they selected it at purchase...

Not sure what I'll do. My launch day M1 Pro 16gb 1tb is holding up well. If I do upgrade it will be simply because I want to, not because I need to. AppleCare just expired and I have 45 days to decide on AppleCare renewal, so I should know what I am going to do by then.

If I do update, I may just go for the base M4 processor now that those models have 3 USB C ports. My computing power needs would be easily met by the base M4.

Do not load enough 14" M1 Pro (10 / 16 / 32 GB / 4 TB) for work tasks.

I wish it could run Counter Strike 2 for occasional gaming fun, but... after few attempts I just go to a gaming club next door where I pay like 2 Euros per hour for a good gaming PC with 24" 1080P 240Hz gaming monitor.

That is, a geek and IT nerd inside of me felt like upgrading to maxed out M4 Pro chip when I saw the new Mac Mini release. 64 GB of RAM was unexpected... and it is sad that Apple does not offer this "full" chip for the MacBook Pro.

That is, overall for all the tasks I do today (not those that I think I will do one day) - I am perfectly happy with the M1 Pro.

If somehow gaming will improve on the platform and M4 Pro will handle CS2 1080P, high settings with 120+ fps I will probably upgrade to have a do it all computer.
