M1 pro macbook new webcam awful, or just software issue?

I’ve had a 2017 macbook pro and just got the 16” m1 pro and noticed how much worse the ft camera looks. Its super washed out and looks like a strong filter is being applied. Has this been a thing for anyone else?

For context, I rely on facetiming a lot due to long distance from loved ones during the pandemic, so its an important factor. If its a hardware thing then I could exchange for a different one I suppose.

which version of Monterey? how does the video quality look when you use e.g. Quicktime or Zoom?

Lastest OS, i updated it once i got it on tuesday. I havent tried a different web cam service but i’ll check when i get home after work
