With all the threads about Apple port offerings on the new MBP Pro/Max and the possible hardware or software problems with the SD-card slot, I want to get an idea of the proportion of Pro/Max users that actually use the SD-card slot.

I have a WAG that it's about 25-50% of owners. Let's see if I'm anywhere near right!

I use it regularly, but so far it's not blowing me away with speed and it's a little glitchy. I haven't tested it out head to head against my external card reader yet, but I'm not under the impression that it's significantly faster. If it's not, it's a huge disappointment because I'm not using one of those expensive high end card readers with sustained throughput.

OTOH, it works well enough and it's convenient. I'm not against having it, but it wasn't something that made me more likely to upgrade to an M1x. Dongles never bothered me. I have too many peripherals. I'll need dongles no matter what. I've had dongles for as long as I owned a laptop.

I don't expect the results of this poll to be very meaningful due to bias and mischief, but it might be entertaining :)
Let's hope so :)

However, we might get an approximate figure for those that actually use the SD slot, versus those who don't use it or claim to hate it (even if they are secret users who are in denial...wearing dark glasses and a dirty raincoat every time they do...)

Not sure how much any poll on MacRumors really reveals. They're just good for conversation fodder.

Despite the nay sayers, I’d prefer at least one, but preferably two, USB-A ports instead.

Yuck. Pass. I have few USB-A peripherals still in my rotation. Of the few that remain, they all have USB-C end-cap adapters on them so they're all converted to USB-C.

The only thing I use USB-A for is charging.

Good idea! I hate that more than 50% of the time I try to insert a USB-A plug it is upside down. I don't know what's wrong with me.
It's a well-known physics fact that USB-A connectors occupy a quantum state in which they are the right way round and the wrong round simultaneously. You always have to try it one way and then the other, before finally returning to the original orientation for their quantum value to be resolved.

I initially just got a few of these endcap adapters, but I kept misplacing them and I'd never be able to find one when I wanted one. They cost around $2-3 on eBay for the good quality ones so I just picked up 15 of them. All of my USB-A peripherals are now USB-C. The only ones that aren't capped are charging only cables.

Even worse are micro-USB plugs because even if you have it oriented right, you still might not get it in and once you turn it upside down thinking it was upside down before, you've done ended up on the wrong end of a lost cause.

Multiply frustration by 10 if you're old enough to be farsighted because you can't even tell which end is up without a flashlight and magnifying glass.

Based on the 36 voters to date, it looks like nearly 2/3 of M1 Pro/Max users either use the SD-card or plan to.

So we can safely conclude that Apple correctly included this slot to please to majority of the MacBook Pro users :)

If it were an election, they'd call that "a landslide".... /s
