Just browsing around and as of this posting, the M1 Studio Ultra is in stock at Best Buy. I think the base model is a great buy, the M1 Studio Max (with an upgrade to a 1TB) is a fantastic value. Go get em. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/mac-studio-apple-m1-ultra-silver/6461446.p?skuId=6461446
Not sure if it is really in stock. I ordered one from Best Buy because Apple was back ordered until June and it is stuck in processing well past their estimated ship time. Best Buy is known to lie about their actual stock. In stock means minimally back ordered… Hopefully I will at least get mine before June.

If you are not looking to order a custom build, check the inventory daily online for the Apple stores that are near you. They have the base Max and Ultra configs arriving every week. When I wanted to order my base Max, it was going to be a two month wait if I placed the order, but I kept checking my local (relative term) Apple stores and they constantly were getting the machines in stock. I did an in store pickup and had it in a few days, instead of months...

Similar situation for the ASD .... my order via Apple hasn't moved from processing in a month .... ordered one yesterday from Costco ... will be here Wednesday. And, it's $100 cheaper than the one from Apple and AppleCare is $10 cheaper.

I checked local Apple Store inventory Wednesday evening and was able to purchase an Ultra Studio for pickup the next day. Your logic is on point for avoiding the 'months' delay for a custom build. Especially with the lockdowns in China impacting Apple's production.

I just did this over the weekend. I had a custom order, but it was going to be late July before I got it... 3 months.

MicroCenter had one base Ultra in stock, so I grabbed it. The one thing I wanted to customize was some additional storage (big audio sample libraries), but I can just stash all that on external SSDs (though, not as fast as internal storage).

Ya I have one waiting at Best Buy for pickup… the 1tb is such a downer, I wish there was a way to upgrade the ssd!!! Very frustrating predicament.
