Hi all.

I have a 14inch m2 MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro 12.9 m2. I want to sync the iPad Pro via finder and usb. From what I understand from googling, m1 iPads can only support up to 10Gbit/s, which is absolutely fine for syncing. However, I can only get system profiler to show that the iPad Pro only supports usb-2.0 speeds regardless of what cable I use.

It seems that many people have had this problem with their m1 MacBook pros (14 inch model specifically), and their m1 iPads. I do have cables supporting 10Gbit/sec, and they all work fine with my external hard drives at 10Gbit/s, just not the iPad Pro.

Does anyone have the same setup as me, and they are able to get USB3 speeds? If so, can you tell me what you did, and/or what cables you are using to get those speeds? Thanks!

Did you use the Apple supplied USB-C cable? The one provided with the iPad?
If so, it's a charging cable with only USB 2.0 connectivity. You need a better cable to achieve higher speeds. I've got a similar setup, only mine is both M1.

It isn't clear you are going to get anything beyond 3.0 or 3.1 USB speeds.

Oh I know with the supplied cable you get 2.0 speeds. But I have tried with 3.1 cables as well. Do you have a 3.1 cable with your setup and get 3.0 speeds?

I know that you won't get anything beyond 10Gb/s between an iPad and a Mac/PC. However I can only get 480Mb/s with my current setup with the two 3.1 cables I have. I'd be happy even with 5Gb/s if I just knew which combination would work.

Have you tried an actual Thunderbolt cable? USB-C is a mess of optional capabilities.
I unfortunately don't have one. I don't really want to buy one, especially an active one if the chances of it working are low. Though if I can get some confirmation that a specific cable works, then I will most likely get one as well.

You may want to simply investigate USB C cable comparisons by transfer speeds.

I do, and I just tried it out for you between my 14" MacBook Pro and M1 iPad Pro. System info says "Up to 10 Gb/s".

Haha, I see this thread gained traction!
Great to see it's working for you guys, I'll have to try a TB cable too - my M1 Pro MacBook Pro and M1 iPad Pro don't get any faster transfer speeds than 480Mbps over the two cables supplied with my Samsung t5 and t7 SSDs.
The SSDs report as 'Limited to 5 Gb/s', so yes USB-C is a mess of a standard :D.
Aside from 'corporate greed', I see why the alleged future iPhones might have an Apple certified cable requirement.

So I just wanted to update this thread for anyone else.

I got my hands on a thunder bolt 3 cable from Lenovo, and I can finally get 10Gbit/sec in combination with my M2 iPad and M2 MacBook Pro 14 inch! Too bad full 40Gbit/sec won't work but this is much better than being limited to 480Mbit/sec. I can live with that!

The exact model of the cable I used is: Lenovo P/N: SC10M59509 FRU P/N: 03X75399
