I know there aren’t a ton of M2 iPad Pro upgraders here, but for those that have bought the new device, just checking to see if this is a shared experience.

For most day to day tasks, my 12.9 iPad Pro flies and doesn’t have any issues whatsoever. But when I start doing some editing in Lightroom or Pixelmator Photo, it heats up substantially. Right in the middle of the screen is where it’s hot to the touch, but the entire back enclosure is what I’d consider warm.

It gets to the point where the display has to dim and won’t go above a certain point (like when iPhones get hot), and that’s not something I ever remember encountering in my M1 iPad Pro. Is this just the reality of the M2 running slightly warmer for the improved performance? The screen thing usually corrects itself and allows for full brightness within a couple minutes.

M2 does clock higher than M1 and Apple has made 0 improvements on thermals, so that is to be expected. With that being said, if the screen gets heated like that for extensive period, your M2 could die sooner than expected. Better get it replaced asap. The heat should always be dissipated from the back, not from the screen.

My M2 iPad Pro 1TB runs hot also. I complained at the Apple Store and after the second trip they replaced it, but the replacement is no different, so I’m figuring it is a bad design. My 2018 pro was never hot. This M2 one is uncomfortably hot to touch on the screen even now without running anything special, but my main use is ArtStudio Pro, with a pencil, and that is too hot to use — which kind of defeats the whole purpose of the device. The ambient temp at the moment is 30 degrees C here in Brisbane, so maybe it will be better in winter.

My way of coping is to remove the case, run it on a support which gives a comfortable drawing slope, and point a usb fan at it from the side so it blows under and over, and then it runs at a usable temp.

I’m telling myself the advantages of the extra power and memory, and the pencil hover, make it worthwhile to use it as a desktop-bound device. It is blindingly fast at least.
