I used my 2018 iPad Pro and Apple Pencil 2 exclusively for note taking so I didn't have to carry around notebooks. I bought the 1TB M2 iPP and I notice the same amount of lag as the 2018 model when I write in GoodNotes. It isn't terrible but it also isn't like writing on paper, naturally.

Has anyone here upgraded from an M1 or M2 iPP to the M4 iPP and also use their iPP for note taking? Would upgrading to the M4 iPP improve this lag? Is the M4 smoother in general? Is it noticeable? The only issue I have with the M4 is fear of eventual burn-in as I will be not be using dark mode.

Interesting enough, I came across the following while researching this. Has the lag actually worsened?

GoodNotes - a separate issue not related to the iPP?

I don’t experience any lag at the pencil tip, but when swiping through a handwritten 1000+ page notability document, it was unworkable on the m1 and previous. It was doable but lagging on the M4 and really flying on the M4…

Any lag with pencil input has been negligible for me ever since the first iPad Pro plus Nebo notes. But other apps might of course behave very differently.

I went to the Apple Store today and played with the M4 iPP. They had GoodNotes installed on the iPad and I was able to test the response time. It was definitely faster. But it's one of those things that you will not notice about your M1/M2 iPP until you actually try the M4. I'm still debating whether it's worth the upgrade just for note taking.

My M4 iPad Pro is definitely more "paper like" than my M1 iPad Pro with the pencil. Not sure if it is the M1 vs M4 chip, but on the M4 it is more "instant". It's as if there is some kind of delay or lag on the M1.

Something always felt off to me with the M1 iPad Pro.

The OLED displays on the M4 models have a much faster pixel response time than the LCD model Pros. IIRC the 2018-2022 Pros had a pixel response time of ~50 ms while the new models are around ~5-10 ms. This leads to less perceived lag in pencil input, since the pencil stroke is reflected on screen faster. It also solves the issue of “smear” when scrolling that some complained about on past models. I don’t think I would say this change makes it more like writing on paper. You’re still very much writing on a glass computer screen. But the experience is definitely more responsive.
