I have an opportunity to buy a brand new in box M2 MBP new in box for $900.00 from a coworker. Reading reviews, they say the 256 gig SSD is significantly slower than the larger models. I'll be upgrading from my 2010 or 2011 maxed out 15" Core I7 MBP, which is showing its age. I'll use it to do some video editing on from my Mavic 3 in 4K and 5K using FCX 10. My current MBP won't edit it. I also like to take my laptop on motorcycle trips, so a 13" screen would be nice for packing in my saddle bags. What do you guys think, should buy it?

No!

256GB for video edit? Really? 😂 M2 have a power, but potential power will start from 500GB SSD and 16 or 24 GB RAM. For video edit on the way need minimum 2TB SSD storage for comfortable work.

Better is take base model Macbook Pro 14 M1 Pro.
M2 Macbook Pro only plus is a crazy long battery life, but if you swich from 10 year old intel Macbook Pro you will be happy also with Macbook Pro 14 inch battery life.

I would 100% buy it for $900. The SSD really doesn't matter, not even for most video editing work. It's plenty fast enough.

Limited 8GB RAM swapping to slow 256GB storage are double whammies. I'd wait for deal on at least 16GB RAM if not 16GB + 512GB SSD. Post Xmas is just around the corner where you'll see them put up for private party sale.

If the SSD space is sufficient for you then it’s quite a good deal. Don’t worry about the SSD speed it’s still plenty fast.

box M2 MBP new in box for $900.00
I've been going back and forth on what to say. I actually had a post already typed up. The 900 dollars is really a good price. I'm not terribly concerned about the 256GB storage speed. I think to the human eye you really won't notice the minor performance hit.

What kind of trips me up is that its the M2 MBP, vs. the new design in the M1 MBP, HOWEVER, the M1 MBP has a big negative compared to the 900 M2 you're being offered. The base price of a 14" MBP is 1999 (USD). You're spending a thousand dollars more.

The only thing I'm worried about is the 8GB of ram - I'm assuming it only has 8GB. If I were you, I'd verify that the software you use can easily be run on a 8GB MBP. If it can, then the 900 offers an excellent deal. Just for comparison, the base 13" MBP is 1,300 and one with 16GB of ram is 1,500. So 900 is really hard to pass up
