and do you guys think apple will bump the default ram to 16gb ?

I think it will be 12 or 16GB. Don't know if the M4 is noticeably faster than an M2 Pro. I can only compare M3 to M2 Pro and for my use case there is no difference.

Maybe the non-pro will get as much Thunderbolt 4 ports as the pro has now if it doesn't get Thunderbolt 5, what I don't need yet.

Same for WiFi7 or a newer Bluetooth version, if it will get those.

Let's see what the new design will change and if there will even be still a pro version in that small thing. There is already too much overlapping with the Studio and I don't think Apple likes that.

No.When I bought my M2 Pro a year ago, I wanted a mac to last me a few years, and I'm still confident that it will do just that. Once every few years I will do this, often after having checked out the cheaper versions of new models first. Can't be buying a new mac every year just because the processor has a higher number.

I work on a trickle down system of sorts… I’m waiting on the next generation Mac Studio and when I get it, I’ll replace my [base] M2Pro mini with my [loaded] M1Max MBPro. The mini will replace my Apple TV (I’m a Canadian hick and cannot write ATV when talking about in-home tech) as I’ve begun to detest all of the commercials being added to streaming services, YT, and non-macOS devices in general in my home…

From the M4 MBP benchmark that has been uploaded to Geekbench, it shows about a 25-30% average CPU increase from binned M2 Pro to base M4, but the GPU Metal score on the M4 is about 75% that of the binned M2 Pro.

So a base M4 could be a better bet than a discounted M2 Pro if you don't need the graphics performance or the option to upgrade the RAM.

My M2 Pro is a great little machine. I'll probably upgrade to the M4 - but in the Studio, not the Mac mini. I have found that 16GB of RAM is nowhere near enough for my workflow. So my next buy will be at least 64GB.. and you can't get that in the mini.

I bought the M2 Pro Mac Mini for 16GB Ram, extra Monitor connection and extra power (over M2) for longevity. I use my Mac a lot, but for my use case, its more than I need, and I expect to get years of use out of it.

I may buy a M4 or M5 for my partner, which I would use if mine was to fail (as I use it for business).

Not to upgrade my M2 Pro, but I'm giving a bit of thought to upgrading my 2018 mini.

Got my M2Pro mini with 32GB. It satisfied my needs then, it still satisfied my needs now and I anticipate it will continue to satisfy my needs for several more years into the future. Nothing wrong with the postulated M4 or M4Pro mini, I just don’t have any need to update.

No. But not because I don't want to. If my children gave me this for my anniversary (not a scarf or a sweater), I would be happy. But...

Although I am not addressing the question directly, I have a 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max and and M2 15" MBA. If they release a M4 14" MBPro, I will probably trade in the M2 15" MBA for the M4 14" MBPro. The 1" loss in screen size will not be a big loss I think (13" is too small and 15" is very nice, but I tried out the 14" and think it will be fine) and the Pro screens are extremely good along with audio sound etc.. It also looks as if an M4 MBA is a long way down the road and I often go to my 16" Pro for the better screen. Weight difference between the 15" MBA and current M3 14" MBPro are small (1.55 Kg for current M3 14" MBPro, 1.31 for 15" MBA). My 16" MA Max (64GB and 4 TB SSD) is perfectly fine for the moment.

I have an M2 Pro 32gb/1tb. There is no reason for me to upgrade.

But, if the bug bites… who knows? It’s not like I’m using the performance of the one I have. I’d love to see it being able to be powered via USB-C PD from my dock… my OCD might compel me to buy it if that’s offered.

yes ! ofcourse.
M2MiniPro (12core). I have not enough singlecore speed.

I expect the M4 to be ~40% faster on SC than M2. That´d be nice.
I want a studio max, but can´t wait. Dilemma

I was so disappointed when they didn’t redesigned the m2 Mac mini
I’ve been using a 2012 mini
So 12 years looking at the same computer and then I bought the m2 pro
I know this is a stupid reason to upgrade to the new redesigned m4 , but I’m sick of looking at the same computer since 2012 on my desk for another 5-10 years
Honestly the Mac mini m1 should have been the new looking Mac mini

My M2 Mac Mini is still going strong and I would have a very, very hard time justifying upgrading at this point. If my M2 crapped out, sure. But until this thing catches on fire, catches a virus from hell or something else catastrophic happens to it, I wont upgrade.

Plus my wife already said no...
To be fair, if my Mac Mini M2 were to catch fire, I’d be hesitant of getting another Mac Mini…

oh?
What would you get instead? Studio?

That was tongue in cheek -- if my Mac Mini were to catch fire out of the blue, I would be hesitant to get another for fear that it would too! Love the MM, and will always stick with it unless I decide to go down to one Mac instead of having both an MBA and a Mini.

Tho, now that I think of it, we had a GE fridge back in the day that was close to catching fire. The the ice maker stopped working. It was a year or so out of warranty. Didn't think anything of it.

(long story follows, but it's quite entertaining. At least it is to me.)

Had the GE repair guy come out. He pulls the ice maker out, and has a VERY concerned look on his face. The way ice makers work is that after freezing the ice, there's a little heater to ever so slightly melt the outside of the cubes so that they can be popped out into the bin (that's one of the reasons why a lot of times if you don't use the ice maker often enough, all the cubes stick together).

Apparently the thermostat failed, so the heater kept increasing heat. And the fail-safe also failed, which is supposed to turn off the heater so the fridge doesn't catch fire. The only thing that prevented the fridge from catching fire was that the wires to the heater became overloaded and burned out, severing the electrical connection.

The repair guy showed us where the fridge was all melted inside. He called his supervisor, and used phrases like "we are lucky this fridge didn't burn down this guy's house," "I've never seen anything like it -- it's really bad," etc.

Repair guy hands over the phone to us. The supervisor without us saying anything says, "we want to give you a new fridge. Your current one is no longer made. Take a look online at what fridges we currently sell, pick one, and call me at this number and we'll get it installed within a week if it's in stock, and if it's not in stock we'll move you to the top of the line and when it comes in we'll install it within a week."

Since then we've purchased three more GE fridges. Now that they're owned by Haier, I wonder if the service will be as good.

Nah, my Mini M2 Pro is pretty much specced out, with the 12/19 Core config and 32GB RAM. 2TB SSD is serving me well as it always has. Maybe M5/6 will be worthwhile, as the most processing power I need lately is for Plex, or PLA on Ryujinx.
