Since upgrading to 15.0, my M3 MacBook Air is warm/hot to the touch, and the battery is dropping rapidly. Before upgrading, the laptop was always cool to the touch, and the battery lasted forever. It says Safari is using significant energy, but I just have the same old tabs open as always. anyone else?

Sounds like the new update is hot off the press. I'd do a temp check on the internals with a thermometer.

Have a look in the Activity monitor. I also have some processes regularly going crazy since the 15.0 betas. What makes my M3 iMac very hot. I have now an App installed called App Tamer, that warns when processes reach a certain limit and can throttle them.

You can try this free for 15 days.

P.S.: I think it's gone better since the latest 15.1 Beta.

I THINK it’s safari causing this hot mess.

Ps I don’t have a thermometer for laptops lmao
To see the temperatures and much more you can use this

or this

P.S.: App Tamer and iStatMenus are both in Setapp what also has a free trial for one week i think.

Just got that from App Tamer while writing here. I didn't click on anything. It went down to 4.4% after a few seconds by itself.

It also shows the total percentage of CPU usage in the menu bar. So you can see if you really need to "tame" an app.

Why did you update then? You should have waited. All the problems and bugs would have been discovered.Do a system rollback

Sort it that way in Activity Monitor and if there are some processes (not apps) with more than or near 100% just force quit them a few times by selecting them and clicking on the X. If it's the same problem I had, it will stop after maybe 5 times doing this. But coming back the next day. I think it is really fixed now in 15.1 Beta 4.

If it comes from Apps, just restart them normally. Rebooting the Mac can also help, didn't help it with my processes problem, they went up again directly after that.

It must be something you're running. I did the update last night and my Air is running just as cool as it did before. I don't think it's Safari causing it.

For me this started somewhere in the later betas and all were processes that never use much CPU and seem also not to be very important, because I stopped them for a while completely from running and everything still worked.

He should see in Activity Monitor if it's Safari or could just close it and wait if it's getting better then after a few minutes.

Safari was never a problem in any beta for me and I started on day 1 of Dev. Beta. I also used mostly the Technology Preview when it wasn't outdated like now again.

Please let us know, if you found the reason. @erkanasu

Activating low power mode in the energy settings maybe could cool your Mac down in the mean time.

Thank you so much, MacRumors fam, that solved it! This 'EWCservices' related to older canon software was invisibly running at 100% after the upgrade. I disabled and now she's running nice and cool.

I had the same problem on my M2 Air. The culprit was some piece of crap that Adobe installed that was running at 100% all the time. I eliminated the task and noticed no difference in the Adobe products. Lightroom and Photoshop run just fine without the crap Adobe installed.

I really despise software companies that assume the entire machine is theirs to do as they please. Adobe is one of those companies. Unfortunately I need LR and PS for my work.

Also be aware that many external USB drives will continue to consume power when not in use but plugged into a USB-C port. I know from personal experience that SanDisk is one of those devices. I only leave external SSDs plugged in when I am on line power, not battery. On battery the files are copied to the Mac, worked on, then put back some time later.

Bad thing is when you don't notice it because the fans are so silent or you don't have any. Maybe I had this crazy going processes already before I had "System Status" what is similar to "iStat Menus" in the menu bar.

On an iMac you don't touch often the part that would get hot. Bu I think I heard them a little and installed the menu bar app showing percentages because of that, when I saw them in Activity Monitor.

I just came here to report the same thing and thank you guys for your suggestions... Pulled up Activity Monitor and notice that the Time Machine backup and going CRAZY... Turning it to manual until Apple fixes it.

I still have it every day with four or five processes I think. It always happens only once a day. And they are always the same, photolibraryd, coreduetd, IMDPersitenceAgent, corespotlightd and imagent is there too, but not so extreme like the others.

They always go crazy together and after a few times (I think three is enough) force quitting them in Activity Monitor they are going back to normal and while I do this BiomeAgent is going up too and I quit it also a few times.

I am on 15.1 Beta 5 and I think it startet in Beta 3 und was gone in 4. Could also have started earlier and I just didn't notice it because I only saw it because of System Monitor or iStatMenu and don't know when I had one of those installed.

They also only went all a little over or near 100. So alltogether maybe 400-500% and that didn't slow anything down. I just noticed the very silent fan when it had been quiet and the recognized, the iMac got very hot in the middle of the big bottom bezel. I rebooted but it came back immediately.

And I am doing almost nothing when that happens, less then now, and now they look like this:

Screen Shot 2024-10-01 at 00.57.30.png

So they are doing nothing. I should note the time when it happens, to see if it's always the same.

Just updated again to overwrite everything with the full installer a few days ago, but that didn't help.

If I were you I would do a back up and then wipe and reinstall MacOS. Sometimes a major update after many other updates over time can cause corruption. Much more rare on Mac's but it happens and when you have odd errors right after an update and they don't self correct after a few hours or a day then I would wipe the drive completely and reinstall MacOS.

If you wipe and reinstall MacOS then most likely any issues you are experiencing will go away unless you have a hardware issue not related to the software. Sometimes hardware failures also can pop up near a major update??

Best way to rule out software or hardware issues wipe and reinstall and go from there. Good luck!

Yes, I think I'll do that when the final version of 15.1 is released. It's time for a clean install after all those betas.

I just upgraded to Sequoia 15.0 with no issues on an M2 MBA. No overheating at all.

So I think it may just be a corrupted update or something like that but you know your Mac better than I.

Probably is best to wait for 15.1 as they should resolve any initial bugs in the first release.

Just hope you can get your Mac running right!

Have to say, off topic my M2 is aging well. I generally wipe and reinstall the drive often though because I am weird like that. In fact, I might just do it now since this was a major upgrade.

I often wiped everything until a few years ago, but now I am sick and slow.

Strangest thing is that Beta 4 had fixed this. And I also never really had any problem except this although I started on day one with 15.0 DB1.

Sorry @erkanasu for your troubles - but know that I love all of you who jump on the macOS early and are Apple's 2nd betatesters 💕
I save my time to .1 when Apple usually got their stuff a lot more steady.

Second this. People who install .0 version should knew in the first place that this kind of issue will be happen.
