According to Apple:

  • If you still have to enter your password: For security, you need to enter your password when you start your Mac. Sometimes you need to enter your password to continue using Touch ID. For example, users must re-enter their password every 48 hours and after five incorrect fingerprint attempts.

On mine, I can't recall when I've had to enter my password, or at least on a regular basis. On a restart, yes, manual entry required, of course. I only leave it in Sleep, with the exception that every Sunday night I shut the thing down. How is it that I'm getting away without manually entering a p/w?

I've come to the conclusion that due to user error (me!) I was making the issue worse because I wasn't holding down the button firmly and not rolling my finger until the screen turns on. I know it sounds dumb, but all of those misreadings of my fingerprint did count as fails, which of course added up and hastened the manual log-in requirement.
