Had a 5-6 inch crack in the display (no idea how it got there). Display was still functional, but had Apple Care so immediately took to Apple Store.

Very pleased with the turnaround--fixed and returned on the third day.

Here's what I'm asking about: upon return, I had to set up as a new Mac. Apple had either reset the computer or transferred the serial number to a new build? (can they even do this?) The keyboard had been cleaned, the case cleaned...no wear or oil on the keys. It really looks brand new. Same serial number as I sent in though.

Why would they have to reset the computer? I have everything backed up on iCloud but now downloading things like Steam, waiting for mail to sync, etc.

Thanks for any input.

Yep. They will usually remind you to make a backup for that very reason. No idea why the wipe your disk, but always be prepared for it whenever sending in for any repairs.

They probably replaced your entire machine and just reprogrammed the serial #.

It's very unlikely they replaced the entire computer but the parts that were replaced should be listed with the repair documentation.
