Hi Guys,

I currently have MBP 2015 15" and I think it is time to upgrade (having issues with display ribbon at certain angles, battery needs replacement (I can do that on my own), and still gets warm/hot with typical usage (I have reapplied new liquid thermal paste with mil improvement). My use case is typically 10-20 tabs on safari, Citrix into work for notes, maybe watch videos or movies - no gaming. At best I am get into editing home videos etc but nothing heavy professional by any means. What I want - cool running laptop (this is very important to me) for my use case and that will also at least 6-8 hrs on battery (mine lasts 3-4 max as of now - may be will be better with new battery)

I thought about MBA 15 - similar screen and mostly will do what I need to do and more with base M4 (when it comes out).

However, I want a better screen so I am thinking about MBP16 but the question is:

M3 pro - 12 CPU (6 off +6 per) OR
M4 pro - 14 CPU (4 eff + 10 performance) - advantage latest tech so will give me another 10 years or so use

Having read diff forums including reddit - it seems M3 pro may run cooler due to more eff cores and not engaging performance cores? Need opinion from people who know about this - I have more software knowledge than hardware.

With education discount, and Apple Card, I can get M4 pro 48 2 TB for the same price as discounted M3 pro 2TB.

If needed, I can still squeeze a few more years out of this machine but I also want new macOS :) (without modifications LOL)

please help with the decision. Thank you.

A base MacBook Pro 14-inch M4 will be more than enough to handle everything you’ve listed for many years.

An M4 Pro isn’t needed.
I would have bought the base M4 but I want a bigger screen on account of aging eyes :) so either I can change the battery and keep MBP 2015 going until MBA M4 comes out shortly- will be more than a pound lighter than 16 - I can try to go with 15.4 inch similar screen to the mBP 2015 but 14 inch is a no go

You are way over thinking it if you currently own an intel MacBook Pro and are worried about the thermal profiles of the M3 versus M4. Both are an order of magnitude better than the intel. Both will run cool. Get the M4.

M4 Pro for the win. Don’t get the minimum for your needs, get what YOU want. You’re going to love the beautiful 16” screen!

Get a 16" and M4 Pro with 14/20 [defaulted on a 16"] && 24GB ram // 1 tb storage.
i know some will say they can survive on 512GB but the 1tb is suitable
2/4/8tb options are very steep jumps imho and not really required. makeshift 2x 4TB external ssd's for 300$ ea.
