My iPad Pro 11” M4 Cellular 1TB is rebooting once every 3-4 days. It’s on official iOS 18.3 firmware. How do I know? Whenever I try to unlock it in the morning, it doesn’t accept Face ID and says you need to enter passcode after iPad has restarted. I have Apple Care + on it though. But anybody’s M4 iPad Pros restarting randomly?

@d5aqoëp,
Can you double-check the battery graphs to see if it really restarted? If it shows gaps, then it did overnight.

Try shutting off automatic updates during nighttime by going to Settings > General > Software Update. Are you beta testing? If so, these updates come out so frequently that it automatically updates whenever the iPadOS update(s) are downloaded and installed in the background, while the iPad is connected to power and on WiFi.

I have the same iPad, I get prompted every few days to enter my code but never noticed any reboot. I thought it was a security thing.

My iPad mini 7 has done the same thing a couple times; I presume that there is a bug someplace but haven’t had opportunity to try and isolate it yet. It is definitely not the inactivity reboot in my case.

The Customer Care guy ran a diagnostics and the report came out ok. Battery has just 40 charge cycles in 6 months. My usage has been light since last 3 months though. It remains unused for 3-4 days at a stretch. So maybe new security feature kicking in?

Your answer popped a bubble to a video I saw of an iPhone 14 Pro doing the security reboot. Is this what you are talking about? I have never seen it on an iPad.

I have not seen the password requirement pop up from days of sitting idle. I’ve been prompted from daily use of my iPad using faceID (and on macOS as well using the fingerprint sensor).

It appears that AppleCare has confirmed that the iPad Pro’s battery capacity is near new. Based on our observations, it seems possible that this is connected to an iPadOS 18 security feature called a security reboot. The Secure Enclave monitors the iPad’s unlock duration even after a reboot and initiates a self-reboot after a few days. This could explain why the iPad unexpectedly restarted since you don’t frequently use it. Do you usually leave it on or do you completely turn it off when you’re not using it for an extended period?

If your iPad has ever restarted while it’s charging or sitting idle without any updates, has it done so in any way?

Check for Full Panic Logs in your settings.
Get a new one in warranty if there are many of them.

I think there’s some misunderstanding going on, I just managed to to get security prompts every so often regardless in daily use.
Besides updating, have you tried using the power off/emergency SOS menu? If you do, it will prompt you to enter your password again to use Face ID.

I haven’t. I did have to do a manual reboot which of course requires my PIN code this morning.
Hold on a moment. I think it hasn’t automatically restarted, except for updates, right? Do you occasionally restart your iPad Pro? How frequently do you perform a force restart on it?

By the way, I’m not sure if this feature is available on iPadOS, but could you please enable Power On and Off Sounds in Accessibility > Hearing > Audio and Visual settings? Many people on iPhones use this setting to check if their device restarted overnight. OP, try this out too.

I rarely restart my iPad unless something’s gone wonky (had an odd wi-fi bug this morning that I can’t recreate. As for your second question, there is no boot or shut-down chimes like the iPhone 14. Kind of a bummer as I liked that feature.

Understandable. Were you an iPhone user in the past?

Instead of the iPhone 16 Pro you got an android 🤖 ? I’m curious to know more about the iPhones you have.

Without going too off topic, I tend to upgrade only when I really need to. My previous phone was the 14 Pro Max and before that, an iPhone 11 which was an upgrade from my 6 Plus, before that, a 5S, 4S, 3GS and 3G and finally the original 8GB model.
