I'm needing some portability this year (stuff I can't on on my ipad), so I'm looking at upgrading my M1 mini to a 14" MacBook Pro. 90% of the time this pro will operate in clamshell mode, replacing the desktop Mini that I currently have. Right now I have a connect to a Dell 4021QW 40" Ultrawide 5k2k and plug a separate 2.5G ethernet adapter into my mini. I currently run a 10G mikrotik switch between my mini and NAS (NAS is full is 10G) and would like to upgrade my mac's dongle to a 10G Ethernet adapter in the future, (hoping the Caldigit TS5 will have 10G ethernet). I'm curious if by getting the base model M4 with Thunderbolt 4 if I may be limiting myself when I go 10G with the ultrawide monitor. If not, I will save myself some money and get the base M4 MacBook Pro, or even wait a bit and get an M4 Air, since I will only be using it as a portable about 10% of the time or less.

10 Gbps is about 1000 MB/s. USB 4 is about 3500 MB/s. These are real-world speeds.

Mind you, most home NASes can't keep up with those speeds unless you populate it with SSDs.

I have a similar setup (Studio display + 10G) and have not noticed any issues but I'm generally not watching closely to see if I'm maximizing my throughput though I've certainly seen it maxed out when copying to an SSD on the other device and I've seen Resilio max out the port too when syncing files to my MBP.
