i added subs to a m4v with subler and it plays in quick time and on my apple tv...but wont play in itunes or even allow itself to be added to itunes.

is this a known bug?

thank you

It would help if you gave us a few more details. My mp4's and m4v's with subtitles added by Subler are playing fine in iTunes, so it's hard to know the problem.

Yes, but you'll have to re-encode the video, so it'll take much longer. Handbrake (the latest nightly builds at least) supports burning hard subs into the movie.

ok i managed to get the subs in but now when their is no speech needing the subs i get a big grey box at the bottom of tv screen where the subs are shown when their is some.

(when played through my apple tv 2)

its avatar and i only need subs for the navi parts...

I'm not sure about that. :( I'm also having trouble with a white box appearing at the bottom whenever I try to make the subtitles bigger in Subler. Otherwise they're showing up too small.

If it's just this movie, it's probably worth it just to use Handbrake and hard sub it.

i would but handbrake doesnt find bluray subs (yet...)

Couple of reason responsible for it. But I think The Apple presets are for Apple products and .m4v with embedded subtitles are not an official standard but some proprietary Apple nonsense (sorry peter I know you will probably read this and disagree

What happens when you play the video in iTunes? The soft subs are not displayed? Yet somehow they do work in QTX? Maybe you should download the .srt file and remux using subler.

Not Peter here, but while the .m4v extension isn't official and is indeed "Apple nonsense," the actual format is just a regular mp4 container.
