Mac 10.6 & WDTV Live

Hi All,

I have just purchased the HDTV Live and am having issues networking the mac and the media player.
I can see the WDTV on my Mac but cannot find the shared folder on the WDTV.
I have followed all the instructions for setting up shared folders, downloaded the latest firmware and also tried creating a new account on the Mac for the WDTV but so far no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's a Lion OS problem. Sharing files to the WDTV worked great under Snow Leopard. However, in Lion, Apple dropped the excellent open-source Samba implementation of Windows SMB sharing and rolled their own. Among other things, this has broken sharing files to the WDTV Live.

You have a couple of options to work around this.

1) You could use a different device to share your media files. For example, you could hang a media drive off of an Airport Extreme and share them from there. Apple has not yet broken SMB sharing on their routers.

2) You can reinstall Samba sharing on your Mac. There are some fairly complicated instructions available for doing this. However, I found this link to info about a tool which makes the installation easier: http://knowledgebase.hsti.com/re-installing-smb-on-mac-os-x-lion-10-7-x
I haven't tried this yet myself. Right now, I have just copied a bunch of my media files a drive attached to my Airport Extreme.

Hmmm, I just noticed the thread title says you are using Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard). Sharing to the WDTV Live should work on that OS version. I assume that you did enable SMB (Windows) Sharing on your Mac, right?

Does your Mac's name appear after you select Video/"Network shares" on your WDTV?

Thanks for the reply. My Macs name finally showed up on the WDTV late last night. Not sure what I did that made it appear but it is now working which is great.

No more constantly having to physically move my hard drive when I want to watch new downloads.

Now if only the US Autumn schedule would start so I had something to watch!!!

This works! Great link. Samba wasn't installed so this app installed and started it. Definitely try this if your on lion and can't get the network sharing working. (Also ensure SMB is enabled in the system preferences -> sharing -> options -> tick share using smb)
