OK....I know this has been posted a zillion times probebly but everything I've read ( so far ) doesn't help. Here's the setup:
mac pro 5,1
OSX Sierra 10.12.3
ASUS GTX970 Stryker
32gigs of memory
Apple 27" display with mini display cable

Now will only happen randomly. Sometimes for days, no problem. Duration doesn't seem to have an impact on it. I thought this may well be an Nvidia thing so I put my ASUS Radeon HD7970 in & works like a champ. BTW, these are both PC cards. Hate to say this but seems like the 7970 outperforms the 970 in a lot of ways, waking is one of them. LOL. anyway.....back to the problem. Any one currently have ( or had) this problem & found a cure. I've did the sys.pref, internet thingy also.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, cause I'll have to borrow the 7970 from my wife's 5,1 & that wouldn't be nice, would it LOL

Just checking, because the "baseline" has been moved now that Sierra was updated, but have you upgraded to 10.12.4 and are still experiencing the problem?

While it may be something else, this is the classic symptom of a dying power supply.

There are a number of things you can try: changing the sleep preferences via terminal; deleting the "sleep image" if your MP is set to save RAM contents to HD; replacing the PRAM battery; resetting the PRAM, resting the PMC (I may be messing up the acronyms here).

Still at 10.12.3 but will do the update later today.
Thanks
[doublepost=1490872723][/doublepost]Never heard that one about the PS but who knows. Doesn't do it with the 7970 & it has the 6 pin & 8 pin as the 970 & draws about the same current. Does the same in my other 5,1 but not with the 7970. Thought maybe it could be the ATI thing since mac is partial to them. Both of my machines run excellent, boot just fine, no lag with either card on anything I throw at it. Nothing connected to either machine but the display. One 5,1 is a 2.26, other is 2.66, virtually identical. Adobe & other applications are on a separate HDD & not connected.
Thanks for the reply, will try to check the PS.

Very interesting.

We customised a Mac Pro 5.1 with a GTX970 4GB card (the only one we made with a GTX970) and it also had sleep issues.

Everything fine, just "sometimes" would not wake up from sleep.

Now I have disabled the sleep function altogether, but wonder why it has this issue with the GTX970

That is interesting. Maybe it is just a 970 glitch. Mine also has 4gigs. Fine out anything, please post it.
