I'm looking probably to purchase a Mac book air 11.6 64 2gig I purchased today a seagate Free agent go flex 500 gig external hard drive is it a good idea to store anything on an external drive since I'm getting the smallest air I'm limited on funds and want to work with the least amount of money invested . Any thoughts?

Why shouldn't it be a good idea to store data in an external HDD?
I do it all the time, in fact I have several external HDDs (2.5" and 3.5") to store my data on and the internal HDD of my iMac and internal SSD of my MBP just hold the OS and applications and temporary files.
Just make sure to backup your important files to whatever other medium you have, as HDDs can fail.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but have you considered buying a refurbish from Apple? You can save between $150-$250 (depending what model you get) and starts at $849 for the base model.

I bought my Unibody MacBook Pro almost 2 years ago as a refurbish from Apple.com, it arrived in 24hrs and it was flawless, not a single scratch or sign that it has ever been used, and it is still working perfectly fine today. I am currently in the process of selling my MacBook Pro to my cousin (she just filed her taxes and is awaiting for the money) because I have always loved the thinness and portable of the MacBook Air, but the previous generation was way to expensive ($1,800) and lacked so much to justify the price.
Anyways, I have been eyeing the 13" MacBook Air w/128gb storage for $1,099 from the refurbish store and in about two weeks or so I hope to be buying it.

I was in your same boat. I ended up going with the 11.3 4gb ram 64 gb macbook air. First of all I went with a refurbished one. It's great.
64gb of memory makes me nervous and I've bought a couple of things to help. Check out the Lacie Moskeyto. It comes in 2, 4,8, 16 and 32 gb. It is extremely tiny and you can plug it into the usb and leave it in because it is so small. Then I went to western digital website and found a 500gb hard drive for $48

i got the base 11" 1.4ghz, 64GB with 4GB of ram, and my free space on the SSD is still 45GB, because i put all my datas on WD 320GB external drive. it's a great combination. I do have a spare external disk for backing up the main external drive though, incase **** will happen one day.
I'm looking into buying a 64GB 11" air, and I own a 500GB Seagate external drive. I don't need to bring my entire collection of music/movies/pictures with me to class every day, and keeping all of that on an external drive would free up about 50 GB. I haven't used the drive for anything aside from Time Machine backups (on a 200GB partition) so far. Other than being tied to the desk (the HDD has its own plug, so I likely won't take it with me), is there any disadvantage to keeping data on an external drive? Will there be any slowdown or strange behavior because the computer is accessing it through the USB port? If I keep iTunes and some or all of its info on the external, will it cause any issues with backing up my iPhone? What will happen if the computer tries to access a file that's on the external drive, but I'm away from my desk?
