Mac App Store crashing - high CPU load - when trying to update to 10.10.4

I am trying to update my iMac (2010 i3 core duo) to the latest Yosemite 10.10.4.

As soon as I load up mac App Store and click 'updates', it shows the 10.10.4 update as available but the 'checking for updates' wheel' spins constantly, never finishing loading - have left it for 30+ minutes. Clicking the update button for 10.10.4 does nothing. When I go to force quit Mac App Store, it shows 'App Store Web Content not responding' in red.

What also happens is that in processes, 'softwareupdate' is showing as using up to & over 100% CPU and even after force quitting the Mac App store, 'softwareupdate' is still running and taking up CPU making my Mac virtually unusable and I have to restart.

Getting beyond frustrated now! All I want is to be able to run the latest iTunes/Apple Music!

Same here, softwareupdates proces is 100% and it eats all the memory and growing. It happens since new updates was announced

Not just me then! Some relief in that. Maybe because servers are overloaded? Will maybe try combo update later and avoid Software Update entirely.

i just tried following procedure, and now it works.. i dont know what is necesesary and what isn't, so try:

- delete all in Macintosh HD/Library/Updates
- restart Mac a do a PRAM reset
- when Your Mac boot after PRAM reset, open App Store and download some App, new or from purchase history
- and then finaly go to Updates in App store and it finds latest updates and softwareupdated is no longer 100% and memory leak

Same Here, had to down softwareupdates via activity monitor, then download OSX combo update and install it "manually". https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1820?locale=en_GB

Now experimenting issues with command line tools and itunes updates, after download stalls and don't install.

I found force quitting the softwareupdate process via activity monitor (not the app store, just that process) works without requiring a full restart, and occasionally, that will jumpstart the app store back to normal. Note that your memory pressure is also skyrocketing when this happens. Force quitting softwareupdate frees up the memory again.

I've not seen this issue on 10.10.4 Macs, so perhaps it was a discoveryd related problem.

I ended up booting into recovery and reinstalling OSX and that obviously got everything going. However, now after a period of time my computer screen goes black and nonresponsive so don't do that.

That seems to have solved my issue. 10.10.4 has now appeared and is downloading

Try downloading the 10.10.4 Combo update from OS X support, like as not Apple`s servers are getting hammered for the auto update

Let's make something clear on the troubleshooting steps:

1. Press CMD+Space and write Activity Monitor, double click on the first result.
2. Search for a process named App Store, select it and click the X icon on top to kill it. (Do the same with softwareupdated)
3. Download the 10.10.4 update using this URL: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1820?locale=en_US
4. Install the update and let it restart.

Now you should be able to open App Store and update your applications as usual.

That seems to have solved my issue. 10.10.4 has now appeared and is downloading

Will try that - not checked since I got in from work. May bypass App store completely and download combo update. I did get iTunes ok direct from web site this morning.

Same same here, over numerous attempts. I downloaded the combo stand alone, installed... Everything is back up and normal again... And, if you are one of those that then suffers the repeated entries for 10.10.4 in the MAS updates list. Delete the journal txt file in ~/Library/Application Support/App Store.

Good to go.

it happen the same to me here .. then i force quite the softwareupdated then i manage to to do the update to 10.10.4 however the app store still show one update which is the iTunes 12.2, and when i press on update it stuck and show the app needs to update ..

Try killing both processes App Store + softwareupdated, restart, and try updating again.

i did that but still the same, the update stuck in 62MB and then stop .. i added the screen shoot

1. Make sure you kill both processes App Store + softwareupdated again.
2. Open Terminal.
3. Write open $TMPDIR../C/
4. Delete folder named com.apple.appstore
5. Restart and try again.

i did that, but still the same.. it's stuck in downloading in 62.1MB and then stop and show that the update is still available..

Have you tried connecting to a different network?
