Mac approved, tested, warranteed RAM?

greetings friends,

I am looking to buy more RAM for my new mini and my wife's g4powerbook.

I have read many of the threads here by folks like CanadaRAM and others extolling the virutes of "guaranteed mac compatable" RAM, which i agree with.

I think many of these same folks have recommended newegg as a good place to shop (I have used them for other stuff to great success).

I need to make an order with newegg this week, so i would like to pick up the RAM in the same order.

my question is, how do you tell which RAM on their site is mac compatable? is all of it? it never seems to mention. any brands they carry in particular? (Transcend, Patriot, kingston, etc etc).

I do recommend RAM which is guaranteed mac-compatible by a reputable seller. While you can save $10 - $20 by taking a chance and doing your own testing, I don't believe it is worth it for all but the most hardware-adept Mac owners.

However, I never recommend NewEgg, because they specifically do not guarantee compatibility on anything, and they do not (or extremely seldom) sell RAM which is guaranteed by the manufacturer to be compatible with Macs. And, they have a restocking charge policy that enables them to charge you 15% restocking charge plus shipping if you want a refund for RAM that doesn't work in your Mac. (and just before all you NewEgg fans pipe up about that, PCWorld's seller satisfaction survey found that 19% of NewEgg customers responded that they had been charged restocking fees, almost twice the industry average response and the highest in the survey.)

You should know that Apple does not certify, approve or recommend any third party RAM brands, so it is down to the seller doing the testing and guaranteeing compatibility.

On MacRumors, the most often recommended USA vendors are
Crucial, OWC (MacSales) and Data Memory Systems

You could call and ask, but I believe the Educational pricing is for school boards and universities to buy in bulk quantities on institutional purchase orders.

Edit - I had a look, and there is an online form that you can register with. It says Educators rather than Education, so I don't know what the qualifications are; but it's likely worth the time to fill in the form, at least.
