So I've been thinking that blogging is something of a killer app. Does that make sense? I'm trying to say that tools like blogger.com and Moveable Type are putting amazingly easy publishing power into the hands of the people. I get the feeling that Apple's .mac and iLife tools are designed to make the computer a part of our lives, and Apple has always been committed to making the computing experience as human as possible. Why isn't a blogging tool part of .mac?

Head on over to Type Pad and take a look around. The screenshots are obviously taken on a Mac running OSX. Type Pad is based on open standards, just like Safari. It seems like the perfect technology for Apple to adopt and incorporate into .mac. I have a .mac subscription, but I pay extra for blogger.com (I'll probably switch to Type Pad when it's ready). Apple needs to incorporate a blogging program into .mac

Any thoughts? Ideas? Is this old news? Does my butt look big?

Well just because Type Pad is shown on OS X doesn't mean that Apple has anything to do with it. I personally don't are for these things, but I know that there are many out there that do. Remember that Apple does not like just picking something up, but instead likes to make a splash. So if something along these lines is going to come out by Apple, you'll have to wait until they find a way to make it extra special.

Obviously. My point is that this stuff is being developed by mac users...an indication that it'll work very well on a mac.

Also, Apple has proven that it doesn't mind "just picking things up." iTunes is a souped-up version of a shareware program whose name I forget...all I know is that I paid $30 for it about a week before Apple announced iTunes and gave a better version out for free.

I agree that something is missing from .Mac. I think "integrated blogging" would be nice, but it still isn't the "killer app" for .Mac. Blogging isn't cutting edge any more, and if Apple introduced it as a service, I think it would generate more criticism than praise. On the other hand, maybe they could do something really exciting with the idea, combining features from iLife (photos and movies) and perhaps even the new iChat (webcam or "click here to chat with me").

For the record, I am a .Mac user, but when renewal time comes around, I don't know if I'll renew, since I just don't get that much for my subscription. A cheap web hosting plan would get me more for less. So I hope they do something exciting with .Mac, or the few subscribers they have will begin to migrate away.

what i would like to see as an innovation could be some form of your own personal .Mac media station. you could have your own radio station that could stream music, or any other audio, stream video, post blogs, video chat, etc. like everyone could have their own personal little .Mac tv stations that you could "tune in" to. i know all these technologys are currently available but wrapping them up in a single user-friendly package would be killer. i guess it would come down to a bandwidth issue for Apple servers and for the users. just a fantasy.
