Last weekend I noticed my Mac was running slow. I did everything suggested. I upgraded to the latest version of Sierra, bought and ran (multiple times) Clean My Mac. Now it's so slow that I cannot do anything. Before the upgrade I was able to look at Memory and quit processes. Now I can't even do that. If I click on something, nothing happens. It's MUCH slower than it was. I feel as if it's worth nothing now. I have not been able to use it for days. I'm at a loss.

  1. Are all of your files backed up?
  2. Which Mac do you have? (specifically, what specifications?)
  3. Have you tried to boot into safe mode?
  4. Have you ran Apple Diagnostics?
  5. Have you already attempted to repair the disk?
  6. Have you reset the PRAM and SMC?
  7. Did you check the launchd folders for startup items that are sucking down your processes?
  8. Have you ran Malwarebytes?
  9. Have you reinstalled (fresh reinstall) Sierra?

Clean My Mac is IMO not very useful. A free program called Onyx can do most of its most important functions and quite a lot more. If you are still using the trial, I recommend not purchasing it.

[doublepost=1513825557][/doublepost]You are correct. It was not very useful. I DID pay for it and I regret it. WARNING to others! What I did find, when I came home...was that kernal_task was using an incredible amount of CPU. I checked the temperature and though it seemed fine, I shut it down and put an external fan on it for a half hour or so. I turned it back on and the thing just worked as it always did. So I'm assuming that was it. Strange. I don't know why it would have run so hot. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

There are several potential causes for and fixes to this. However, in order to further advise (if this issue reappears and you have the same problem in the future), it will be helpful to know which of the above methods you have already tried, so that we are not advising you to do things that have not worked.

Additionally:
10. Are you connected to any WIRED external devices at all? (monitors, keyboards, hard drives, printers, etc.)
